Shapovalov looks to inspire kids.
- Shapo has remained in the Top 30 of the PIF ATP Rankings
- He was named ATP Breakthrough of the Year and Most Improved ATP Player of the Year in 2017.
Mexico City, July 4, 2025.- When Denis Shapovalov was 15 years old, his childhood idol, 20-time Grand Slam winning legend Roger Federer, called him to help him in a warm-up for the semifinals of the 2014 Toronto Masters 1000. That was a moment of inspiration and motivation for the Canadian.
Because of that influence, he now wants to use his game and on-court performance to “inspire more kids to find their way (…) and show them that it’s possible to do it on your own, if you really believe in it and work hard.”
Three years after “sparring” with Federer, Shapo, as he is known among the players, was named ATP Breakthrough of the Year and Most Improved ATP Player of the Year in 2017.
That season was decisive in his career and already in 2018 he appeared in the top 50 in the world until climbing into the Top 10 in September 2021 and did not leave the top 20 in the rankings until July 2022.
Then came a period of ups and downs, but since the end of 2024 he has been in a constant progress and since the beginning of 2025 he has been among the top 30 of the PIF ATP Rankings and with that label he arrives as one of the star players to the Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo to be played in Los Cabos from July 14 to 19.
This season Shapo has a 15-13 record and one title, the Dallas Open, an ATP 500 in which he beat Norwegian Casper Ruud, a week that boosted him in the rankings.
He has a career record of 222-185 and has won titles in Belgrade 2024 and Stockholm 2023, all on hard court, his favorite surface. He will arrive in Los Cabos after his participation in the third Grand Slam of the season, Wimbledon, where as a junior he won the singles title in 2016.
