Los Cabos, August 4, 2023.- Mexican Santiago Gonzalez and Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin, top seeds, advanced this Friday to the doubles final of the Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo being held in Los Cabos.
Gonzalez and Roger-Vasselin defeated Colombian Nicolas Barrientos and Swede Andre Goransson 6-7, 6-4, 10-8 in a hard-fought match in two hours and one minute.
With hard fought points, the Mexican and the Frenchman recovered after losing the opening set, won the second and came out on top in the super tie break.
“We knew the match was not going to be easy at all and we leave very happy with the fight we had the whole match, it’s one more step and hopefully tomorrow we will have a good match,” said Gonzalez after the match.
He said that they have a certain advantage for playing at home with the support of the public, but warned that the final will be difficult.
After qualifying for the final in Los Cabos, the Mexican and the Frenchman will be looking for their third title of the year after the Miami and Marseille Master 1000 titles.
“If today’s match was complicated, tomorrow’s will be even more so and we will have to play well. In the finals this year we have done well and tomorrow we want to win and I hope that with the push of the fans it will be a great day for us,” he added.
In addition, Gonzalez is looking for his first title in Mexico in his second final, the first one he signed at the Acapulco Open 500 in 2015 alongside Poland’s Mariusz Fyrstenberg.
At the Los Cabos ATP 250, two Mexicans reached the final and won it, the first was Miguel Ángel Reyes Varela alongside Salvadoran Marcelo Arévalo in 2018 and the second was Hans Hach Verdugo alongside American John Isner in 2021.
Gonzalez and Vasselin will clash in the final against the winning pair of the duel between Ecuadorian Diego Hidalgo and Colombian Cristian Rodriguez (COL) against German Dominik Koepfer and Australian Andrew Harris.
