Title in Mexico, a dream about to be fulfilled by Santiago Gonzalez
- The Mexican alongside Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin is looking for his first title in his homeland.
Los Cabos, August 5, 2023.- Mexican Santiago Gonzalez, currently fifth in the ATP doubles ranking, will try to fulfill this Saturday at the Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo a long-cherished dream, to lift a title in Mexico.
Gonzalez, 40, has so far had his best season as a professional by winning the Miami Masters 1000 title and having outstanding performances in other tournaments such as Marseille, where he was also champion.
“Our goal is to reach Turin and play the ATP doubles finals and we are on that path, this year has been good for us,” Gonzalez told media.
About his participation in the seventh edition of the 250 tournament in Los Cabos, the Mexican pointed out that the important thing for him and his partner is always to compete and give their best in every match.
“I know that if I have a good week, a good tournament, I have a good chance to win. I like to play at home with the support of the public and hopefully this can be my week and if not, nothing happens, I will enjoy the tournament and focus on everything that comes next,” he said.
Gonzalez, who has been constant in his participations in the Acapulco Open 500 and the Cabo Tennis Open, acknowledged that as a Mexican tennis player “it is a dream to win in Mexico, although first of all his goal in the end will always be to win matches and all matches count for the ranking and hopefully we can achieve it”.
He recalled that tournaments are only won by a couple and in tennis, as in many sports, you lose more times than you win.
“The important thing is to keep adding victories and points for the ranking, that is the expectation for the rest of the year. For us this is the first tournament of the summer and the U.S. tour is coming up and hopefully we can start off on the right foot,” he said.
After qualifying for the final in Los Cabos, the Mexican and the Frenchman will be looking for their third title of the year after the titles they won together, the Miami Masters 1000 and the Marseille tournament.
“In the finals this year we have done well and tomorrow we want to win and I hope that with the push of the fans it will be a great day for us,” he added.
Gonzalez will be looking for his first title tonight in Mexico in his second final, the first he signed at the Mexican Open in Acapulco in 2015 alongside Poland’s Mariusz Fyrstenberg.
At the Los Cabos ATP 250, two Mexicans reached the final and won it, the first was Miguel Ángel Reyes Varela alongside Salvadoran Marcelo Arévalo in 2018 and the second was Hans Hach Verdugo alongside American John Isner in 2021.
