Tsitsipas and De Miñaur reach Los Cabos final
- The Acapulco champion and the favorite at the Cabo Tennis Open will meet in the final of the seventh edition of the tournament.
Los Cabos, August 4, 2023.- Australian Alex de Miñaur, fifth seeded, extended this Friday his victories on Mexican soil to nine and with today’s victory he reached his 13th final on the ATP Tour. De Miñaur, current world number 19, opened the fifth day’s activity at the Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo and in two hours and 25 minutes overcame seventh-seeded German Dominik Koepfer, who suffered discomfort in his left arm during the match.
The Australian, champion at the beginning of March at the Acapulco Open 500, now has the chance to seek a Mexican double by reaching the final at Los Cabos.
During the match Koepfer felt uncomfortable from the first games of the match until he fell 6-2 in the first set in only 32 minutes and even got to tears due to the pain in his arm and for the second set he called the doctor, took a pill for the pain and put a stability sleeve on his arm.
The improvement was great as he managed to get 4-1 in the second set and finally demanded a tie break from the last champion of Acapulco, which he won. That second set lasted one hour and 21 minutes and Koepfer seemed to come back and give the surprise, however for the third set, the Australian beat him 6-1.
“I’ve played well in Mexico this year, so I think next year I’ll have to look at exactly what the weeks are, but it makes sense for me to come back here. I work hard to feel good on the court, it’s something that will never fail me,” said De Miñaur after his match.
Later, Greek top seed Stefanos Tsitsipas and Croatian Borna Coric, tied at 3-3 in direct duels, defined the second finalist, a ticket that the Greek won in a remarkable way. The world No. 5 managed to make the score 4-3 against the fourth-seeded Croatian, and settled in his 27th ATP final, third of 2023, in which he will seek his tenth career title and the first of 2023.
Coric was down 3-6 in the first set and by the second his level dropped considerably. Tsitsipas had no setback to close out the second set 6-2 and settle the match in one hour and 11 minutes.
In the final, Tsitsioas has a 9-0 record against De Miñaur and is the favorite to lift the title this Saturday in the final of the ATP 250 of Los Cabos.
