Shapovalov vs Kovacevic, the final of the ATC 2025
- The Canadian’s debut in Los Cabos has been perfect and he is one step away from his second title of the season
- Top 10 player Andrey Rublev was surprised by world No. 76 Aleksandar Kovacevic in three sets
Los Cabos, July 18, 2025.- The final of the Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo in its ninth edition is set. Denis Shapovalov and Aleksandar Kovacevic are looking to add the ATP 250 title in Los Cabos to their trophy cabinet, which would be the second of the year for the Canadian, seeded third, and the first in the career of the American, seeded seventh.
The Canadian won Dallas, while Kovacevic, No. 76 in the PIF ATP Rankings, has only played one final in his career, Montpellier this year. On the other hand, Shapovalov is enjoying his debut week in the Mexican tournament, while Aleksandar is a regular in the tournament, in both cases the conditions have been favorable for his game.
“I think the final is always a great honor, especially at such a high level like this, it’s very special for me to be here and I’m going to enjoy it,” Shapovalov assured.
While he had been measured in his statements throughout the week, assuring that each match was going to be more difficult than the last, his dreamy days and resounding victories show otherwise. The third seed took 66 minutes to defeat Adam Walton of Australia at the Mextenis Stadium.
Earlier in the year they met in Indian Wells, and Shapovalov dominated his opponent despite committing more unforced errors. The Canadian, ranked No. 33 in the PIF ATP Rankings, saved four break points in the match against the world No. 97 and played one of the most solid matches of the tournament, where he also won 86% of his points at the net.
“I definitely like the conditions here, the balls go through the court very well, it plays very intensely, these are the conditions I like to play in, so I didn’t know what to expect before the week, but as soon as I got here I felt very comfortable” he shared in conference.
“You never know how you’re going to play your first matches on hard court after tournaments played on grass, but I’m very happy with the way I was able to come out strong and today I think I played to perfection,” he added.
In addition, the Canadian will arrive with the advantage of having spent fewer minutes on court than his opponent in the final, Kovacevic, who in the second match of the day beat Andrey Rublev 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
The Russian started off strong by breaking his opponent’s first serve, but went from strength to strength after dominating the first set. He could not take revenge against the seventh seed, after he also defeated him in their only previous meeting in Montpellier.
The second and third sets were a battle of long and intense games and although Rublev outplayed Kovacevic with 10 aces and points won on his first serve (74%), it was not enough.
“I love coming to Mexico in general and Cabo was like one of the first tournaments where I did fantastic, I think it was my first big tournament against Cam Norrie a couple of years ago, so every time I come back it’s good memories and it’s been nice because I’ve had a tough couple of months, so coming back to a place where I feel at home and with good energy is like getting back on track. I got to a final earlier in the year and it didn’t go so well in the last couple of months, so to be back in a final is great,” said Kovacevic after his victory.
Andrey, who made his debut in Los Cabos, committed 39 unforced errors and began to fall into despair as he was unable to hold his serve. He only seemed motivated at certain moments when the fans supported him.
“I had good opportunities, it’s part of this sport. I had opportunities and I didn’t take them, and in a crucial moment I got out and I couldn’t, I made mistakes from I don’t know where and that was it. There was a good atmosphere during all the matches, it’s not about supporting me or not supporting me, it’s about having fun, enjoying watching the matches, enjoying the emotions, enjoying supporting some of the players, that’s the most important thing” said Rublev in his farewell to the tournament.
