Los Cabos, July 19, 2025.- Canadian Denis Shapovalov was the most consistent player in the ninth edition of the Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo and won the final of the tournament to lift the ATP 250 Los Cabos title.
“Shapo, the third seed of the tournament, defeated the seventh-seeded American Aleksandar Kovacevic, 6-4, 6-2, in just 75 minutes of play.
“The title means a lot, it’s always great to win a tournament, it’s the second one and it’s not easy, to win two tournaments in one season, I’m very happy and I hope I can continue like this with this momentum,” he said after his victory.
With the victory in the final, the Canadian wins his second title of the season in Los Cabos, he won the Dallas ATP 500 in early February, and the fourth in his career after Stockholm 2019 and Belgrade 2024.
The first set, Shapovalov took it practically from the first game as he broke his rival and that was the difference to finish 6-4. For the second set, the Canadian repeated the formula by opening again with a break and taking advantage, which he extended with a second break in the seventh game for the 5-2 and served for the title and the 6-2.
The 26-year-old Canadian was the player who showed the best tennis during the week in Los Cabos and in the final his serve was key, as Kovacevic could not find the solution to his strength this week.
The American, also 26 years old, was a worthy rival, but felt the wear and tear of the semifinal, which he won in three hard-fought sets against top seed Andrey Rublev.
“I definitely want to come back, it’s a great tournament, where we stayed very close to the best hospitality of the year, everything is perfect. The organization, incredible, it is not easy after Wimbledon and thanks to the fact that I lost the first round I am here”, expressed the champion.
On his way to the title, Shapovalov by-banked the first round and then overcame Govind Nanda, Tristan Schoolkate, Adam Walton and Kovacevic.
Shapovalov’s display in the tournament and in the final earned him 250 points, $135,325 and next Monday he will appear at 28th place in the PIF ATP Rankings.
