- Shapovalov defeated Mexico’s Pacheco; Norrie beat Australia’s Duckworth; and Tomic defeated Khachanov
Los Cabos, July 29, 2026.—Canadian Denis Shapovalov, the 2025 champion of the Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel OPPO—which is being played this week at the Cabo Sports Complex—advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Mexico’s Rodrigo Pacheco.
Also advancing to that round today were Britain’s Cameron Norrie and Australian veteran Bernard Tomic.
Shapovalov, who is attempting to defend last year’s title, secured the victory in a 68-minute match in which he appeared more settled on the court against Pacheco, who was outplayed by his opponent’s tennis.
“I try to take it one match at a time. I’m really happy with how I played today. It was definitely a very different start from yesterday’s match. I started with a lot of confidence and felt very comfortable on the court right from the start,” Shapovalov said at the post-match press conference.
“I knew it was going to be tough against an opponent like Pacheco. I had to play aggressively from the start and not let him gain any confidence. So I’m really happy I was able to do that today,” he added.
In the quarterfinals, Shapovalov will face Czech player Dalibor Svrcina, who advanced to that round after the withdrawal of Italian Luciano Darderi, the second seed, who retired from the match while trailing 3-0 in the first set.
Another player who was eliminated early from the tournament was Karen Khachanov, the No. 4 seed, who lost to Australian Bernard Tomic 6-2, 6-4.
Tomic, who entered the main draw as a lucky loser, will face fifth-seeded Briton Cameron Norrie—the 2021 champion in Los Cabos—in the quarterfinals. Norrie defeated Australian James Duckworth 6-4, 6-4.
Meanwhile, France’s Arthur Gea defeated American Michael Zheng 0-6, 6-4, 6-0 and will face Argentina’s Cerúndolo on Thursday, who advanced after American Tristan Boyer withdrew.
In the doubles tournament, Australian Rinky Hijikata and American Reese Stalder defeated Mexicans Miguel Reyes Varela and Ivan Liutarevich 6-3, 4-6, 10-8.
Meanwhile, Joshua Paris of Great Britain and Pruchya Isarow of Thailand defeated Tareku Yuzukui of Japan and Ji Sung Nam of South Korea 6-3, 6-4.
The Mexican duo of Luis Carlos Álvarez and Alán Magadán advanced to the quarterfinals by walkover after Australian Bernard Tomic and Czech Dalibor Svrcina chose to focus on their singles matches.
In the final match of the day, Mexicans Santiago González and Rodrigo Pacheco lost to Brazilians Orlando Luz and Rafael Matos.
