Medvedev returns at no. 1 to stay
Mexico City, June 13th 2022.-
Almost four months after reaching the No. 1 spot in the world ranking for the first time at the ending of the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presented by HSBC in February. Daniil Medvedev returns to lead the tour after Novak Djokovic lost points at Roland Garros. This is the first time since November of 2003 that none of the players from the so-called Big 4 (Nadal, Djokovic, Federer, Murray) are seeded on the top 2 of the ranking.
The current leader of the ATP ranking, will make his debut at the Mifel Tennis Open during its 6th edition from August 1st thru 6th.
To better understand his rise, we can take into account that when the tournament was held at Los Cabos in 2016, the Russian ranked at NO. 171. A large part of his evolution is thanks to his talent and consistency that he´s showed on hard court surfaces, in the last year, being the player who has gained the most points.
He´s once again the favorite and candidate to the titles that are played during the hard court season, begining with the celebration of the Mifel Tennis Open, with it´s newest sports venue, the Cabo Sports Complex (CSC).
Here are some career highlights, (mostly on hard court surfaces), hoping to stay at No. 1 for more than three weeks like he did on his first try:
• With only 26 years of age and 8 from making the leap to professional, he adds 13 ATP titles to his resume. Twelve of them on hard court.
• Ended 2021 with a 54-9 record. The only one to exceed 50 victories on such surfaces, with 11 more victories than the 2nd runner up, Alexander Zverev.
• His winning percentage stands at 74.6% (194-66).
• His monetary prizes add up to $23,829,470 USD taking part not only in singles, but also doubles matches.
• He is the tallest No. 1 ranked player in history with a height of 1.98 meters.
• In 2020 he became the first player ever to beat the Top 3 ranked players at the ATP Finals and in any tournament in the tour since 2007.
• His team partners include a female psychoanalyst and performance coach to work with his mental strength on and off the court, the French Francisca Dauzet.
