Los Cabos, August 3rd, 2022.- The top seeds of the Abierto de Tenis Mifel advanced without major setbacks to the quarterfinals of the ATP 250. Top seed Daniil Medvedev is still favorite to become champion in Los Cabos, as for the rest of the protagonists there were no surprises.
The third day’s action at the Cabo Sports Complex (CSC) began with the duel between Felix Auger-Aliassime (No. 9) and Mexican Alex Hernández.
The Canadian was surprised by the level shown by the local youngster who achieved a historic triumph for the country by advancing to the second round, however his Top 10 level led him to control the situation and despite committing six double faults in the match and losing his serve twice during the second set, he defeated the 23-year-old Mexican 6-3, 7-5, who said goodbye to the best performance of his career with a warm ovation from the crowd.
“I didn’t get much easy points from him. It wasn’t a perfect match, but those are rare. It’s always a battle of adjusting yourself against your opponent. The atmosphere was very humid, we ran a lot, I played poor games on my serve in the second set. In the end the win is always positive, when you lose enough matches in a year, when you win it has to be. I’m relieved and happy that I was able to win. I know I have to play better, it’s not something new for me, I know I can get the best out of myself at the end of the week” commented Auger-Aliassime after the press conference.
He will now face American (USA) Steve Johnson (No. 92) who required three sets 6(3)-7, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 to knock out Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis (No. 75).
It was the turn of world No. 1. Daniil Medvedev who needed 1 hour 32 minutes to defeat 6-4, 6-3 the 21-year-old Australian Rinky Hijikata (No. 224), who had reached the second round after the retirement of Mexican Rodrigo Pacheco.
“The most important thing is that I won. I found details where I can play better, but overall, I felt good physically and mentally.”
He will now face Ricardas Berankis of Lithuania, who eliminated Argentine Facundo Bagnis 7-6, 6-3. To close the activity on center court, reigning champion Cameron Norrie (No. 12) started in one of the shortest duels of the current edition where he defeated 20-year-old Chun Hsin Tseng (No. 84) of Chinese Taipei 6-3, 6-0 in one hour and 13 minutes.
Norrie will face Radu Albot (No. 118) of Moldova this Thursday, who eliminated Jason Kubler of Australia 6-4, 6-2.
In other singles matches, Brandon Nakashima (USA) defeated Australian Max Purcell 6-3, 6-3, while fourth-seeded Miomir Kecmanovic (SRB) did the same against Jordan Thompson (AUS) 6-4, 6-2
