Favorite Medvedev advaces to face Kecmanovic
Daniil Medvedev (No. 1) defeats Ricardas Berankis (No. 98) to advance to the semis.
Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic (No. 38) advanced after defeating Brandon Nakashima (No. 61).
Los Cabos, August 4th, 2022.- The first semifinal of the Mifel Tennis Open was defined after world No. 1 Daniil Medvedev defeated Ricardas Berankis (No. 98) 6-2, 6-2 in quick game of 1 hour and 20 minutes.
Both players were splitting victories prior to the match, as Berankis beat Medvedev in 2019 in Dubai, but the Russian had struck the first blow in 2018 as a qualified player in Moscow. As the main favorite to win the title, the Russian did not lose his serve during the match where he also hit eight aces against the Lithuanian.
“I like the progession of my game in the last matches. Ricardas is known for hitting hard and close to the line so the tournament has not been easy, but today it was. Sometimes it is difficult to adapt to the conditions, but I have to try to be at my best level” said the Russian after the end of the match.
The match that started activities inside the stadium during the fourth day was Miomir Kecmanovic (No. 38) against Brandon Nakashima (No. 61), finalist of last year´s edition in Los Cabos.
The Serb had not faced the young American before, but showed why he entered the draw as the fourth seed. Although Nakashima has shown great level this year, where he even reached the fourth round at Wimbledon, in only 1 hour 26 minutes the match was defined 6-2, 6-4.
Kecmanovic with only 22 years has a title in the ATP tour and now he will have the not so easy task of facing the great favorite Medvedev. The only previous meeting between the two took place in the last edition of Roland Garros where he lost in straight sets.
“He is a great player, very strong and is improving this season. I know I have to play my best, as I have been doing. Here you need to win four matches for the title, I already owe two but the more I advance the more pressure. But there are four great players” commented Medvedev during a press conference
