The Mexican-French pair, Santiago González and Edouard Roger-Vasselin defeated Austin Krajicek and Nicolas Mahut 7-6(4), 7-5 to claim the trophy at the hard-court ATP Masters 1000 event in Florida.
“It was my dream, of course,” said Gonzalez. “Lifting this kind of title, a Masters 1000. I’m 40 years old, I didn’t have one, this is my first. I’m glad [it’s] today. Today is my son’s birthday, so I’m going to remember this day for the rest of my life and I’m very happy.”
Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard beat Juan Pablo Ficovich 6-7(5), 7-6(6), 7-6(3) after 2h 40m of play in the final of Challenger 75 in León.
“I was really happy after the match. It was my goal to win my first Challenger this year as early as possible,” Mpetshi Perricard said. “I did everything great that week. I was nervous all day before the final, because the final was at six. I was really nervous in the morning and after my first training. During the match, it was very stressful. So much emotion. I was not in a good position in the second tie-break, losing 0/3 and 2/4. I was really proud to win.”
Andrey Rublev clinched his first ATP Masters 1000 title when he overcame teenager Holger Rune 5-7, 6-2, 7-5 in the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters final.
“Finally I did it. I did it in Monaco with the really historic tournament. It’s a pleasure to be part of it,” Rublev said. “To win [a] match like this, losing 4-1, Love-30, break point for 5-1, and to be able to come back and to win [the] match is like a fairy tale today.”
“To have this support, it means that for sure I can be a better person and I can work on it and I can improve and to try to share it with others,” Rublev said. “To have this support, I feel really, really grateful, because, I don’t know, it’s not easy to get support in general. To get a good support is really tough.”
