Mexico’s Santiago Gonzalez and Britain’s Neal Skupski advance to quarterfinals in Los Cabos
- For the third day a Mexican player won in the doubles tournament
Los Cabos, February 21, 2024.- Mexican Santiago Gonzalez and British Neal Skupski made their debut with a victory and advanced to the quarterfinals of the doubles tournament of the Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo 2024.
Gonzalez and Skupski, top seeds, defeated by 6-2, 7-5 the pair formed by Mexican junior Rodrigo Pacheco and Argentine Diego Schwartzman, in an intense and entertaining match for the stands on court 1.
“It’s hard to adapt when you come from another tournament, we arrived a little late, just yesterday, but I think it was a good match, we played two good sets and fortunately we won,” Gonzalez, who won the doubles title in Los Cabos in 2023, told media after the match.
About his rivals tomorrow in the quarterfinals, Gonzalo Escobar, from Ecuador, and Aleksandr Nedovyesov, from Kazakhstan, he said they must be very focused.
“Tomorrow we have to concentrate on this match, they are a good pair, good players, we know them well. They are playing well and hopefully things will
work out for us and we can get ahead,” added the Mexican, who is coming from playing the final of the Delray Beach tournament, last Monday.
In the ATP doubles ranking, Skupski and Gonzalez are ranked 8th and 9th, respectively.
With Gonzalez, who had the best season of his career last season, the tournament has three Mexicans in the quarterfinals.
In other matches, Americans Evan King and Reese Stalder defeated Poland’s Jan Zielinski and Hugo Nys, from Monaco, 6-4, 1-6, 10-6.
Meanwhile, at the start of the day, Ecuador’s Gonzalo Escobar and Aleksandr Nedovyesov, from Kazakhstan, defeated Diego Hidalgo, from Ecuador, and Cristian Rodriguez, from Colombia, 6-2, 6-4.
