Mexico’s Reyes Varela and Argentina’s Andreozzi reach Los Cabos doubles semifinals
- Mexico’s Santiago Gonzalez and Britain’s Neal Skupski, top seeds, were eliminated.
Los Cabos, February 22, 2024.- The couple formed by the Mexican Miguel Angel Reyes Varela and the Argentinean Guido Andreozzi qualified to the semifinals of the doubles tournament of the Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo 2024 that lives its definitive instances this Friday and Saturday in Los Cabos.
Reyes Varela and Andreozzi (ARG) defeated Mexico’s Hans Hach Verdugo and Venezuela’s Luis David Martinez 6-2, 6-4.
It was an easy match for Reyes Varela and Andreozzi, who broke their opponents’ serve three times in the first set and twice in the second.
For a place in the final, the Mexican and the Argentinean will face Gonzalo Escobar, from Ecuador, and Aleksandr Nedovyesov, from Kazakhstan, who eliminated the top seeds, Mexican Santiago Gonzalez and British Neal Skupski.
It looked like Gonzalez and Skupski were on their way to victory after winning the first set 6-3 and taking the second set to 6-6, with two breaks per side, but in the tiebreak they suffered two mini breaks for 7-2 and in the tiebreaker, in the super tiebreak, they lost 10-6.
“It was a complicated match, we had the opportunity to have the serve to win the match and that’s why it hurts more. They played very well, they raised their level and in the super tiebreak they played better than us… That’s how tennis is, you only win two or three tournaments a year, you can’t win all the time,” said Gonzalez, who was defending the 2023 title, at a press conference.
“We are leaving with a bitter taste from Los Cabos, now we are going to turn the page because Acapulco is coming and it is also a very important tournament and hopefully we can improve details,” he added
In the other doubles matches, Norway’s Casper Ruud and William Blumberg of the United States defeated Americans Evan King and Reese Stalder 6-3, 6-3.
Meanwhile, fourth-seeded Australians Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson defeated Portugal’s Nuno Borges and Sweden’s Andre Goransson 2-6, 6-1 (10-4).
The second doubles semifinal will be played by Ruud and Blumberg against Purcell and Thompson, who will also play one of the singles semifinals on Friday against top-seeded German Alexander Zverev.
