Ruud VS Thompson in the final
- The final of the eighth edition of the ATP 250 is set and will pit fourth-seeded Casper Ruud against surprise package Jordan Thompson.
Los Cabos, February 24, 2024.- The Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo will celebrate an unprecedented final in Los Cabos after one of the favorites and a surprise opponent in one of the best weeks of his career, Casper Ruud (No.12) and Jordan Thompson (No.40) managed to advance to the decisive match.
The first semifinal on day five pitted two players who shared throughout the week that the tournament conditions benefited their game. With a 1-1 head-to-head record (both previous duels in 2021) there were high expectations for the third battle between Ruud and Tsitsipas, and after an hour 49-minute duel that was decided 6-4, 7-6(4) in favor of the Norwegian, the match did not disappoint.
Ruud, seeded fourth, managed to convert 88% of points with his first serve and saved the five breaks he had in the match. In the first set, he took the lead at 5-3 and in 39 minutes showed that having arrived since Tuesday prior to the start of the tournament was key to acclimatize to the Cabo Tennis Open court. For the second set, defending champion Stefanos Tsitsipas (No. 11), got into rhythm but the difference was minimal in the tiebreak. The Greek had 12 aces on one side, but also one double fault and six unforced errors.
“It’s my first final in several months, it was a complicated last six months, but it’s a good start, I’m excited, my first final in Mexico. The first set was tough, the differences were minimal, it was very close in the second set, I ran on each side and tried to play aggressive when I had the chance” declared after his victory the Norwegian, who even joked with the press when asked about the great level of sport that his country currently boasts “It must be because we eat snow…”.
The second semifinal on the main court of the Cabo Sports Complex was a complete surprise for all present, as Jordan Thompson (No.40) offered a great match for the second consecutive match and was confident against the best seeded player of the tournament, Sacha Zverev. The eighth seed had already staged the best comeback of the week against Michelsen in the quarterfinals, but what he presented in his match against the big favorite was a performance that surprised the local and international fans and the sports press.
It was 3 hours 40 minutes of match with five aces for each side, only one double fault recorded for Zverev, with 61% and 62% of points won on first serve for Sacha and Jordan respectively. “I feel amazing, I had two crazy matches, I couldn’t be happier with my form and I’m going for another title so hopefully it will be better than the last two occasions.”
“Ruud is a quality player and he has a lot of finals, it’s going to be very difficult. I’m just looking for the challenge” he assured after his duel. He also thanked the crowd who applauded him on every deciding point “All night long, I can’t thank them enough.”
