Los Cabos, July 16, 2025.- Mexican Luis Carlos Álvarez advanced to the second round of the Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo, being played this week in Los Cabos, while Rodrigo Pacheco made an early exit from the tournament.
With Alvarez’s victory, two Mexicans will play in the second round after Alex Hernandez advanced on Monday, a situation that had not happened since 1998, when the Abierto Mexicano de Tenis was played in Mexico City.
Alvarez surprised and won 6-1, 6-2 against Australian James McCabe in 73 minutes of the match and Pacheco lost 7-6 (5), 6-3 against Australian Adam Walton in one hour and 50 minutes.
Alvarez (No. 784) overcame McCabe (No. 164) with an impeccable first set in which they started 1-1 and later the Mexican took advantage of his opponent’s mistakes, broke him three times and defended two serves for a 6-1 win.
In the second set, the dominance of the Mexican and the lack of concentration of the Australian continued and after the 2-3 in favor of Alvarez came the break for the 4-2 and thus put on track the victory and the 6-2. It was the best match of the four Mexicans who played in the first round.
“I started a little nervous, but then I started to loosen up, I started to play my game and it started to go very well. I won the physical and mental battle, which I think was a fundamental part to win the match, but until I won the match and saw that ball in the net in the last point, that’s when I had more tranquility, I was always thinking how to win each point”, said Alvarez in conference.
Pacheco suffered a tough defeat judging by what he showed in the first set, in which he showed his development, although in the end his bad decisions in key moments weighed.
The Mexican opened the first set with a break and then both defended his serve until 4-3 in favor of Pacheco. In the eighth game Walton returned the break for the 4-4 and they headed for the 6-6 to define in the tie break in which the Australian, No. 97 of the PIF ATP Rankings, satiated the experience to put pressure on the local and close with the 7-5.
In the second set Pacheco tried to react but lost the third game for the 2-1 against and then Walton broke him in the seventh game and defended his serve to sign the 6-4.
“That tie break was very important, the start of the match was tough. Rodrigo is a great player, I knew it was going to be tough so I’m happy to be able to advance,” said Walton, who had already lost to Pacheco in April 2023 at the Challenger of Morelos.
“I am very sad about the result, in the first set I was on top playing a very high level of tennis, with a lot of physicality and in the end I dropped a little bit, Walton held very well, he played very smart, which was the difference and I congratulate him for his performance,” said Pacheco after the match.
In other results, Australian James Duckworth beat Frenchman Adrian Mannarino 6-3, 6-4 while American Nishesh Basavareddy defeated Colombian Nicolas Mejia 6-4, 6-1.
In the second round, Duckworth will face the second seeded player of the tournament, the Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich-Fokina and the Australian Walton will face Basavareddy.
Two doubles matches were played during the day, Americans Rajeev Ram and Christian Harrison won 6-4, 6-3 against Niki Kaliyanda Poonacha Jeevan Nedunchezhiya, from India.
While Australians Blake Bayldon and Tristan Skoolkate defeated Britain’s Joshua Paris and Takeru Yuzuki 7-5, 6-7(4), 10-7.
