Argentina’s Ficovich advances and Mexico’s Alvarez falls by the wayside
- Ficovich eliminated fourth-seeded Frenchman Halys and Alvarez lost to American Kovacevic.
Los Cabos, July 16, 2025.- Argentinean Juan Pablo Ficovich sealed his pass to the quarterfinals of the Mifel tennis Open by Telcel Oppo, in a day in which Mexican Luis Carlos Alvarez was eliminated by American Aleksandar Kovacevic.
Ficovich (No. 148) was one of the surprises of the day when he defeated fourth-seeded Frenchman Quentin Halys (No. 52) in three hard-fought sets.
The Argentinean won 6-4, 7-6(5), 6-3 in two hours and 33 minutes of action in a match that was entertaining and that Halys extended by winning the tie break of the second set, although Ficovich was sent off in the third set.
The Argentine will face in the quarterfinals the American Kovacevic, who defeated the Mexican Luis Carlos Alvarez 7-5, 6-4 in a match that left a lot of learning to the Mexican player.
“It was a good match, I competed against a great rival, we knew it was going to be very tough and I think the difference was the experience he has (…) I think that in important moments I was not good, I did not play in the best way and in the end he took advantage of those moments and that is why he took the victory,” Alvarez told the media after the match.
In other matches, American Emilio Nava beat China’s Yunchaokete Bu 3-6, 7-5, 7-6(6) and will now face top seed Andrey Rublev in the round of eight.
The day also saw the victory of Australian Tristan Schoolkate, who defeated German Daniel Altmaier, fifth seed, 6-3, 6-4 and will now play Canadian Denis Shapovalov, third seed, in the quarterfinals.
In the last match of the day, the Australian Adam Walton beat the American Nishesh Basavareddy 6-1, 6-0 and in the quarterfinals will face his compatriot James Duckworth, who eliminated the Spanish Davidovich-Fokina.
