Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel OPPO closes with the launch of the Junior Tennis Cup
- The ninth edition of the ATP 250 in Los Cabos closes with the announcement of the new Junior Tennis Cup.
- The tournament managed to surpass the week’s attendance with more than 35,000 spectators.
- This is the first time that Mextenis, CONADE and the Mexican Tennis Federation work together to support the development of the sport.
Los Cabos, July 19, 2025.- The closing of the Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo 2025 comes with a great announcement, the tournament director, Jose Antonio Fernandez, boasted that it managed to break the attendance record with respect to 2024 and therefore the economic benefit increased, but also revealed details about the new Junior Tennis Cup with strong alliances in search of promoting the development of the sport.
“After 9 years of the tournament I can say that it is highly positioned, not only by us, but also by the ATP and players. We are one of the best three tournaments of the category in the ATP Tour, which forces us to be better and deliver a better product each time,” he said at the closing conference prior to the finals.
“We are happy with how the tournament went, we are above last year’s attendance figure (more than 34,000), we are going to be over 35,000 people. By having more attendance, we will have a greater economic benefit, in summer more people come from the interior of the country, unlike in February when it was local people and people from the United States and Canada”, he added.
He also emphasized the great investment that was made to create a new experience in the commercial area, for the enjoyment of attendees of all ages.
He also highlighted the importance of having four Mexicans in the main draw of this edition.
“One of the most important themes this year was the four Mexicans, an epic week, hopefully we get used to having these results and therefore give something back to the public. We are always going to promote national talent and that’s why we give out the wild cards.”
Announcement of an alliance to promote children’s and youth tennis
After these data, the head of the National Commission of Physical Culture and Sports (CONADE), Rommel Pacheco, together with Alvaro Falla, CEO of Mextenis and director of the Mexican Open in Acapulco joined forces to announce the new Junior Tennis Cup, a circuit that seeks to promote children and youth tennis in Mexico, and that will also provide an opportunity for national talent to get closer to the most important tournaments in the country.
.
Among the experiences for the minors are living with high performance athletes, in addition to having access to exclusive facilities and training, since they are tournaments where there will be international scouts and where there may be a link to sponsors.
The Junior Tennis Cup is divided into 10 tournaments and 4 finals, which will be held during the weeks of the professional open tournaments: Tennis Open Cancun, Tennis Open San Luis, Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo and the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presented by HSBC in Acapulco, all owned by Mextenis.
“We are very happy to announce a project that will start in 2026. The most important thing is that Mexican Tennis Federation points will be awarded. President Carlos Gonzalez could not be here, but we are proud of this alliance,” explained Fernandez.
The tournament is an evolution of the Cabo Cup, created by Mextenis in 2016 and which had presence in more than 16 cities in the country. Now the categories are women’s and men’s 14 and under, to be played in the cities of Veracruz, Cancun, Monterrey, San Luis, Leon, Tijuana, Los Cabos, Queretaro, Guadalajara and Acapulco. FMT points will also be awarded.
“This is news that will undoubtedly be history. We have been wanting for years to grow the seedbed and increase the number of Mexicans in our tournaments. We are looking for a way with the FMT and I thank Rommel for the opportunity and I hope it will be for a long time”, added Falla.
Pacheco concluded: “The idea is to create seedbeds, that the sport is social, that it reaches everyone and then moves on to high performance and professional sports. We have seen what Mextenis has done in 33 years. We are going to seek to connect the base, to encourage Mexicans to have a higher level. This is going to be historic and will help youth tennis a lot.
