- 2021 champion Norrie defeated Kovacevic, the 2025 runner-up, while Tomic defeated Mexico’s Alex Hernández
Los Cabos, July 27, 2027.—Britain’s Cameron Norrie, No. 39 in the PIF ATP Rankings, and Australian veteran Bernard Tomic advanced to the second round of the 10th edition of the Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel OPPO, which is being played from July 27 to August 1 at the Cabo Sports Complex.
On the first day of main-draw play, Norrie, the 2021 champion in Los Cabos, defeated Kovacevic, the 2025 runner-up, 6-4, 6-1 in an 83-minute match.
“Los Cabos is a tournament that means a lot to me; it’s where I won my first title, and it’s a place I love to play at this time of year,” Norrie said at a post-match press conference.
He noted that “it’s very hot and the conditions are tough,” but “you have to accept it and adapt to the weather.”
The Brit noted that the tournament is celebrating its tenth anniversary: “This is my seventh year, so I’ve been here most of that time, and it’s a great tournament. I’m glad to be back and to have won today.”
In Monday’s opening match, Australian Bernard Tomic, who entered the main draw as a lucky loser, easily defeated Mexico’s Alex Hernández 6-1, 6-0 in a match that lasted 47 minutes.
Hernández, who had come through qualifying, offered little resistance and managed to hold serve only once in the first set; Tomic broke him twice and held his own serve four times. In the second set, Tomic swept past the Mexican with three breaks and held his serve three times.
In the third match of the day, American Tristan Boyer, who advanced from the qualifiers, upset Canadian Gabriel Diallo with a 7-5, 6-2 victory, while in the final match, Chak Lam Coleman Wong of Hong Kong defeated American Darwin Blanch 6-3, 6-4.
Eight matches to complete the first round
On Tuesday, the second day of competition, Mexico’s Rodrigo Pacheco kicks off the action at Alejandro Burillo Stadium against Japan’s Sho Shimabukuro; in the second match, Canada’s Denis Shapovalov, the 2025 champion, faces Australia’s Rinky Hijikata; and to close out the day, the United States’ Michael Zheng takes on Spain’s Martín Landaluce.
Meanwhile, at the Grandstand, matches will feature France’s Moise Kouame against Australia’s Edward Winter, the U.S. ‘s Jenson Brooksby against France’s sixth-seeded Corentin Moutet, and the Czech Republic’s Dalibor Svrcina against Australia’s Adam Walton.
Meanwhile, on the new Court 1, matches will be played between American Aidan Mayo and Australian James Duckworth, and South Korean Soon Wo Kwon against Frenchman Arthur Gea.
In the doubles tournament, three matches will be held: Mexico’s Alex Hernández and Colombia’s Nicolás Mejía will face the Americans Ryan Seggerman and Patrik Trac; another American pair, Robert Galloway and Evan King, will take on the Australians Fin Reynolds and James Watt; and Rayo of Chinese Taipei and American Benjamin Kittay will face Jean Julien Roger of the Netherlands and Theodore Winegard of the United States.
