Los Cabos, July 28, 2026.- Mexican Rodrigo Pacheco came back from a set down to defeat Japan’s Sho Shimabukuro and advance to the second round of the 10th edition of the Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel OPPO, where he will face the 2025 tournament champion, Canadian Denis Shapovalov.
Pacheco won 6-7, 7-5, 6-2 in a match that lasted two hours and 51 minutes.
“It was a very even match that came down to the finer details. The playing conditions were very challenging—there was a lot of wind on the court and the ball was flying all over the place. We looked for ways to counteract that and try to make it difficult for our opponent, forcing him to think more, making him feel uncomfortable, and playing quickly,” Pacheco explained, highlighting one of the keys to his victory.
The Mexican, ranked 320th in the ATP Rankings, made the most of his wild card to enter the main draw of the Los Cabos tournament and, of course, enjoyed the support of the fans on the second day of competition at the ATP 250.
“We have a very tough match tomorrow. I really have nothing to lose and a lot to gain. It’s the best experience for me, and from here on out, it’s all gain after my first victory in Los Cabos—it’s a dream come true, and now we’re moving forward,” he added.
It was a hard-fought match between Shimabukuro and Pacheco, who came close to elimination after falling a set behind and trailing 5-4 in the second set.
That was precisely the turning point of the match, because he then tied the score at 5-5, broke the Japanese player’s serve, and held his own serve to win 7-5. In the third set, the Mexican took a 5-2 lead after two breaks and served for the match.
In the other match, Canadian Denis Shapovalov, who is looking to defend his Los Cabos title, was upset by Australian Rinky Hijikata, who took the first set 6-2, but Shapovalov rallied to win the second and third sets 6-3, 6-2.
“I’m really happy to have secured the victory. The start wasn’t easy—I hadn’t played a match since Wimbledon, so I was a little nervous and a bit rusty at first, but in the end, I’m glad I was able to turn the match around and get my game back. For me, the second and third sets were incredible,” Shapovalov said after the match.
As for Pacheco, he said he knows him: “We played an exhibition match together last November. So we know each other a little. I’m a big fan of his. I think he has an incredible game. He’s definitely not living up to his ranking. He’s beaten many of the best. He proved it again today—he’s capable of playing truly spectacular tennis, and it’s always fun to play against another left-hander,” he added.
