Mexico City, May 12, 2023.- Born in New Jersey in May 1997, Tommy Paul began training at the age of seven and noticed that over time he had more fun than his peers on the court. Now 25 years old, his philosophy of having fun while competing is key to his development. That mentality has led him to beat rivals like Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz.
A professional since 2015, he shined in the Challenger category in 2019. In 2020 he reached the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time at the Australian Open and then won his first victory against a Top 10 player, Alexander Zverev in Acapulco. By 2021 he won his first ATP Tour title after a perfect week in Stockholm.
This 2023 he is going through the best year of his career after a silent evolution but based on work. In January he reached the semifinals at the Australian Open where he lost to Novak Djokovic. He was a finalist in Acapulco in March and that consistency led him to reach his best ranking, 17th in the world. He has become an awkward player and opponent because of his hard-working style of play, but not well known by the fans despite his talent on fast courts.
Paul will arrive this summer at the Mifel Tennis Open by Oppo Telcel in Los Cabos for the first time, a tournament that along with him will host 5 players in the Top 20.
His coach is Brad Stine and he has made it known that last year they focused on improving his volley and attacking style. He maintains a great friendship with fellow countryman Taylor Fritz, as they grew up together, he was even his best man at his wedding in 2016. While he grew up with Andy Roddick as his idol, his all-time favorite is Switzerland’s Roger Federer.
