Alex de Miñaur, from Acapulco to Los Cabos to get closer to the Top-10
- The Australian is looking for more points in the second ATP tournament in Mexico.
Mexico City, July 10, 2023.- Australian Alex de Miñaur (No. 17) began 2023 ranked 24th in the rankings and although in seven months he has climbed 7 positions, his path to the Top-10 has been like trying to reach the top of Everest, with constant challenges.
In that journey, De Miñaur went through the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presented by HSBC. On March 4, he lifted the Acapulco ATP 500 title by defeating American Tommy Paul in three sets.
With the 500 points from the Mexican tournament, on March 6 he was ranked 18th in the ATP rankings, the best position in his career up to that moment, and since then he has not left his place within the top 20 in the world.
As recently as June 26, De Miñaur appeared at No. 16, the best ranking in a career that began in 2015.
Now, in the second half of the year, the 24-year-old Australian has the chance to return to Mexico to play the Mifel Tennis Open by Oppo Telcel in Los Cabos to be held from July 31 to August 5.
By attending the Los Cabos ATP 250, De Miñaur has the chance to attempt an accomplishment that so far only American Sam Querrey has achieved in 2017: winning both Mexican tournaments in the same season.
That year, Querrey claimed two of the 10 titles he won in singles during his career by winning the Acapulco ATP 500 and the second edition of the Los Cabos ATP 250 by beating Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis in the final.
In this 2023, de Miñaur, whose mother is Spanish and father is Uruguayan, has accumulated good performances, being one of his best achievements the title of the Acapulco Open 500 and the final in the traditional London / Queen’s Club tournament played on grass.
After the final in Acapulco, the Australian assured the media that he has the level to be one of the 10 best tennis players in the world and he only needs to prove it and sustain it.
“I always thought I had this level and I had not been able to show it. This is my third ATP 500 final and I was finally able to win it; now I will try to go up and improve day by day (…) I must play well in the Masters 1000, the Grand Slams and beat the best in the world”, he said after lifting his first title of the year.
