Two Mexicans and one Colombian in the Los Cabos qualifiers

  • Mexican Luca Lemaitre and Alan Magadán along with Colombian Nicolás Mejía enter the stage.
  • Australian Bernard Tomic is also a highlight.

Los Cabos, July 12, 2025.- Mexicans Luca Lemaitre and Alan Magadán, along with Colombian Nicolás Mejía, will seek to advance this Saturday in the qualifying tournament of the ninth edition of the Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo, whose main tournament will be played from July 14 to 19 at the Cabo Sports Complex.

In the opening round of eight matches, Lemaitre will face Estonia’s Mark Lajal, 168th in the PIF ATP Rankings, and Magadan (No. 897) will face Australia’s Moerani Bouzige (No. 348).

Also from Australia, veteran Bernard Tomic will play against American Elijah Strode (N.899), while his brother Isaiah Strode (N.726) will face Colombian Nicolas Mejia (N.243).

The day is completed with the duels between the Americans Murphy Cassone and Evan Zhu and Strong Kirchheimer against Govind Nanda. In addition to the matches between China’s Wu Yibing and American Braden Shick and Japan’s Yasutaka Uchiyama against Canada’s Taha Baadi.

The qualifying tournament in Los Cabos is played on Saturday and Sunday and awards four tickets to the main draw.

MAIN DRAW DRAW READY IN LOS CABOS

  • Three Mexicans in the main draw: Rodrigo Pacheco, Alejandro Hernandez and rookie Luis Carlos Alvarez
  • Rublev, Davidovich-Fokina, Shapovalov and Halys, the top four seeds, advance bye the first round.

Los Cabos, July 11, 2025.- In a ceremony headed by Geoffrey Fernandez, director of the Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo, the draw for the main draw of the ninth edition of the ATP 250 was made. The ceremony took place inside the Cabo Sports Complex, where the top seeds already know their possible path in search of the ATC 2025 title.

As dictated by the ATP, the ranking favorites were on opposite sides of the draw. Andrey Rublev (No. 14), and the second seed, Spanish representative Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (No. 27), await their second round opponents in what will be their debut in Los Cabos. Fokina will face the winner of the match between James Duckworth (No. 103) and Adrian Mannarino (No. 123).

Like Fokina, Canadian Denis Shapovalov (No. 30) was seeded third and will face the winner of the match between Colton Smith and one of the four qualifiers in the second round.

Frenchman Quentin Halys (No. 46) was seeded in the top half of the draw alongside Rublev, while German Daniel Altmaier (No. 57) will face American Mitchell Krueger.

“Shapovalov, Rublev and Fokina are the face of the tournament and are coming off a good year… We are back a year and a half after the summer and we are happy to start this edition,” commented Geoffrey Fernandez, tournament director.

One of the most interesting first round matches will be that of Mexican Alejandro Hernandez, who received one of the three wild cards of the tournament, as he will face Japan’s Taro Daniel (No. 156) in the first round, and if he advances as he did in 2023, he will face top seed Andrey Rublev.

On the other hand, the other pair of Mexicans will face Australians in the first round. Rodrigo Pacheco (No. 220), who also received an invitation, will be looking to repeat his success from last year’s ATP 500 in Acapulco, where he reached the quarterfinals, and will face Adam Walton (No. 90), while Luis Carlos Álvarez (No. 181) will face his first challenge in James McCabe (No. 181).

“I’m very happy, I came with the mentality of playing qualy, we arrived since Wednesday for the preparation, but we received this great news. It’s something very special, I’ve always dreamed of playing in these stages, in front of our people”, commented the 20 year old Mexican in his debut in an ATP tournament and added that facing Rublev would be a dream, which would only happen if both advance to the semifinals of the tournament.

Regarding sharing the singles draw with two other compatriots, in addition to the Mexican presence in doubles, Alvarez said: “I train a lot with Rodri and although each one has his own process, he is one of my best friends. It is incredible for the country that there are so many Mexicans in the tournament”.

Fernandez also mentioned the ballkids, present at the draw ceremony, who were in charge of taking the numbers to know the position of the players in the main draw.

“Thanks to Luis Carlos for joining us, we also invited the ballkids to this draw in recognition of the important place they occupy in a tournament like this, they are all from Baja California Sur,” he said.

The main draw activity begins on Monday, August 14 at 6 pm local time in Los Cabos.

Mexicans in the main draw at Los Cabos

  •  In addition to Rodrigo Pacheco’s return to the main draw of the Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo, 20-year-old Luis Carlos Alvarez will be present in Los Cabos along with Alex Hernandez.
  • In doubles, the experienced Santiago Gonzalez seeks the title

Los Cabos, July 11, 2025.- While Rodrigo Pacheco at 20 years old has won the affection of the Mexican public with his talent and performance at his young age, the Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo in its ninth edition also boasts his compatriots Luis Carlos Alvarez and Alex Hernandez.

Alvarez is a native of Mexico City, born in 2004, and has represented the country in the Davis Cup, is right-handed with a two-handed backhand and makes his debut in the main draw of Los Cabos looking to shine in his first ATP 250 tournament.

In 2023 he was one step away from qualifying, but with the development he has had with his coach Diego Marañon, he hopes to make that leap in quality to play in tournaments at the highest level.

He debuted in 2022 as a professional and has developed in the Challenger Tour, reaching this year the 774th step of the PIF ATP Rankings.

On the other hand, 26-year-old Tijuanense Alejandro Hernandez returns to Los Cabos, where in 2022 he won his first ATP victory in the first round.

Pacheco is ranked No. 220 in the world, the highest ranking of his short career as a professional. After a historic participation in the Mexican Tennis Open in Acapulco, where he reached the quarterfinals.

The Mexican hopes to surpass that outstanding result in singles, but he also has expectations in the doubles tournament that he will play together with Colombian Nicolas Mejia.

On the other hand, the best Mexican doubles player, the experienced Santiago Gonzalez, is looking for a new title in doubles after the conquest in 2023. His partner in the draw is the American Austin Krajicek with whom he won the titles in Mallorca and Stuttgart this year.

Davidovich-Fokina’s black and white

  • The Spaniard aims to break into the Top 20 of the PIF ATP Rankings
  • “Foki” seeks his first title as a professional in Los Cabos

Mexico City, July 7, 2025 – Since the age of 15, Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich-Fokina wears a white sock and a black sock when he steps out on the court – Superstition? Affirmative. Accepted by himself.

“I can’t train or play without one white sock and the other black. I’ve been wearing them like that for a long time and it’s become a superstition,” the Spaniard said after losing the Monte Carlo Masters final to Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas in April 2022.

But his skill, play, courage and ability in tennis, which took him to the 21st step of the PIF ATP Rankings in August 2023, are not the result of that superstition, but training, perseverance and discipline.

“Foki”, as he is fondly called, ended his junior stage as No. 2 in the world, after winning the singles title at Wimbledon and signing a 20-1 record in 2017.

Two years later, in October 2019 he was ranked 101st in the world rankings and from then on it was all uphill for the Spaniard until he brushed the Top 20 zone.

Although his father, Eduard Mark Davidovich, was an amateur boxer, and Alejandro was able to follow his path – he is a fan of boxer Floyd Mayweather, his favorite movie is Creed II and his favorite actor is Sylvester Stallone – he decided, precisely with him, to take up the racquet from the age of three.

With a record of 137-133, this year 23-14, the Spaniard is looking for his first title as a professional and with that goal in mind he will arrive in Los Cabos for the ninth edition of the Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo to be played from July 14 to 19.

So far with 26 years, eight as a professional, “Foki” has three finals, two this year in Delray Beach (ATP 250) and Acapulco (ATP 500) last February, in addition to the Masters 100 in Monte Carlo in 2022.

Shapovalov looks to inspire kids.

  • Shapo has remained in the Top 30 of the PIF ATP Rankings
  • He was named ATP Breakthrough of the Year and Most Improved ATP Player of the Year in 2017.

Mexico City, July 4, 2025.- When Denis Shapovalov was 15 years old, his childhood idol, 20-time Grand Slam winning legend Roger Federer, called him to help him in a warm-up for the semifinals of the 2014 Toronto Masters 1000. That was a moment of inspiration and motivation for the Canadian.

Because of that influence, he now wants to use his game and on-court performance to “inspire more kids to find their way (…) and show them that it’s possible to do it on your own, if you really believe in it and work hard.”

Three years after “sparring” with Federer, Shapo, as he is known among the players, was named ATP Breakthrough of the Year and Most Improved ATP Player of the Year in 2017.

That season was decisive in his career and already in 2018 he appeared in the top 50 in the world until climbing into the Top 10 in September 2021 and did not leave the top 20 in the rankings until July 2022.

Then came a period of ups and downs, but since the end of 2024 he has been in a constant progress and since the beginning of 2025 he has been among the top 30 of the PIF ATP Rankings and with that label he arrives as one of the star players to the Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo to be played in Los Cabos from July 14 to 19.

This season Shapo has a 15-13 record and one title, the Dallas Open, an ATP 500 in which he beat Norwegian Casper Ruud, a week that boosted him in the rankings.

He has a career record of 222-185 and has won titles in Belgrade 2024 and Stockholm 2023, all on hard court, his favorite surface. He will arrive in Los Cabos after his participation in the third Grand Slam of the season, Wimbledon, where as a junior he won the singles title in 2016.

Lorenzo Musetti and a style in extinction

  • The new Top 10 player confirms his level with a style and technique that conquers tennis purists with a one-handed backhand.

Mexico City, May 19, 2025.- The media attention around Italian tennis has focused in recent years on Jannik Sinner and Matteo Berrettini, but from Tuscany, in the north of the country, a third talent has emerged to complete a historic triplet for the white sport of the Mediterranean nation.

This May 2025, Lorenzo Musetti broke into the Top 10 as the sixth Italian to do so since 1973. The fruit of what was the best year of his career in 2024, he won Olympic bronze and reached the semifinals of Wimbledon, as well as becoming a two-time Davis Cup champion with Italy after a 47-year drought.

At 23 years old and with an endangered one-handed backhand, “Lolo” or “Muse”, as he is affectionately known, seeks to remind the world that tennis can still be played with a fine, elegant style and remain competitive. Not for nothing did he grow up with Roger Federer as his great idol and inspiration.

In 2022 was when he added the two ATP titles that he just boasts in his record, in 2024 he made two finals and this 2025 after leaving out his compatriot Berrettini and the defending champion Stefanos Tsitsipas, he reached his first final in the Masters 1000 in Monte Carlo.

The clay season confirms the skills he has for this type of court, his favorite. Semifinals in Madrid, as well as at home, the Rome Masters 1000, where destiny placed him once again against a beast like Carlos Alcaraz, who stopped him from winning his maximum title in Monte Carlo weeks before.

Musetti arrives as a big favorite to the ninth edition of the Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo in Los Cabos. With his current level, his charisma, his taste for traveling and getting to know new destinations on the tour and his obsession with music and good food, there is no doubt that just like the fans visiting the ATP 250 in Los Cabos, Musetti will enjoy discovering all the experiences that the Mexican tournament has to offer.

RUBLEV, MUSETTI AND SHAPOVALOV AT THE MIFEL TENNIS OPEN BY TELCEL OPPO DE LOS CABOS 2025

  • It was announced that two Top 20 players will head the draw of the ninth edition of the ATP 250.
  • Tickets will be 100% digital to ensure the comfort and safety of the fans and are already on sale.

Acapulco, Guerrero, February 28, 2025.- Russian tennis player Andrey Rublev, No. 9 of the PIF ATP Rankings, Italian Lorenzo Musetti (No. 17) and Canadian Denis Shapovalov (No. 32), headline the ninth edition of the Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo 2025 of Los Cabos to be held from July 14 to 19, 2025 at the Cabo Sport Complex, located in the tourist destination of Los Cabos.

Tournament director Jose Antonio Fernandez, along with ESPN anchor Carolina Guillen, announced the details of the tournament.

“We are going back to summer, we will have better weather and that is going to favor us. The prize is one of the four most important ATP Tour 250 tournaments, with a purse close to one million dollars”, acknowledged Fernandez.

The tournament will feature ELC live technology, implemented by the ATP in 2025. The live electronic review system optimizes accuracy and offers an unprecedented amount of data on players and balls, so line judges are no longer necessary.

“We will have new features, including screens that favor communication with the public. One of the most important innovations is the construction of a sixth court and we will be having a more complete complex. The need to have an additional court is on behalf of the ATP,” said Fernandez.

Mexican Rodrigo Pacheco Méndez will be another of the tennis players invited to the main draw of the Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo 2025.

Another activity that cannot be missed during the week of the tournament is the Kids Nite after its success in recent years. Some of the tennis players in the draw live together on the stadium court with boys and girls through tennis clinics.

“It has to have elements for the whole family. While the anchor is sport, we always have to have innovations. We expect an entry that exceeds the attendance we had last year,” he said.

The last edition in 2024 had an attendance of 34,746 people, with an economic revenue of 129.7 million pesos.

The Family Day, a concept that was born in Los Cabos and has become a pillar of the company’s social responsibility program, will also be held. The Tennis Talk, Players Party and Tennis Golf concept will be back for another year.

Tickets will be 100% digital to ensure the comfort and safety of fans attending the Cabo Sports Complex.

Thompson also wines doubles in historic day in Los Cabos

  • The Australian played and won three matches in less than 8 hours at the closing of the Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo 2024.

Los Cabos February 24, 2024.- Australian Jordan Thompson signed an unforgettable night in his career. After defeating Norwegian Casper Ruud in the final of the Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo 2024.

The star player played two doubles matches, a semifinal and a final after winning his first singles title.

He played the three matches in less than eight hours, five hours on the court, in the same day and between Saturday night and early Sunday morning.

After the singles final, the doubles semifinal that was pending between the two protagonists of the final was played. Casper Ruud sought revenge along with American William Blumberg to face the Australian pair formed precisely by Jordan Thompson and Max Purcell, however in two sets it was defined in favor of the singles champion.

Thompson crowned a historic day in his career. He reaffirmed an incredible week after defeating in the doubles final the duo of Ecuadorian Gonzalo Escobar and Kazakh Aleksandr Nedovyesov.

The Australians achieved the ultimate goal and in two sets and tiebreak defeated powerful opponents who had had a better break 7-5, 7-6(2). With that Thompson wrote his name in the ATP history books after playing three matches in the same day.

Escobar and Nedovyesov qualify for doubles final

  • They defeated Mexico’s Reyes Varela and Argentina’s Andreozzi in the semifinals.

Los Cabos, February 24, 2024.- Mexican Miguel Angel Reyes Varela and Argentine Guido Andreozzi were eliminated in the semifinals of the doubles tournament of the Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo 2024 that ends this Saturday in Los Cabos.

Reyes Varela and Andreozzi lost 6-2, 6-3 to Gonzalo Escobar, from Ecuador, and Aleksandr Nedovyesov, from Kazakhstan, who will now play in the final, although they have had to wait to know their rivals.

It was a complicated match for Reyes Varela and Andreozzi, as they suffered two breaks and their rivals held serve four times in the first set for a 6-2 win.

In the second set, the Mexican and Argentinean took a 3-0 lead by defending their serve twice and breaking their rivals, but then came the reaction of Escobar and Nedovyesov, who broke three times for a 6-3 lead.

The second doubles semifinal with Norwegian Casper Ruud and William Blumberg of the United States against fourth-seeded Australians Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson will be played this Saturday after the singles final, which will feature Ruud and Thompson.

The winning pair of that final, after a break, will face Escobar and Nedovyesov in the final.

This decision was made by the ATP, together with the tournament organizers and the players because Ruud and Thompson advanced to the singles final and were still alive in the doubles.

Ruud VS Thompson in the final

  • The final of the eighth edition of the ATP 250 is set and will pit fourth-seeded Casper Ruud against surprise package Jordan Thompson.

Los Cabos, February 24, 2024.- The Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo will celebrate an unprecedented final in Los Cabos after one of the favorites and a surprise opponent in one of the best weeks of his career, Casper Ruud (No.12) and Jordan Thompson (No.40) managed to advance to the decisive match.

The first semifinal on day five pitted two players who shared throughout the week that the tournament conditions benefited their game. With a 1-1 head-to-head record (both previous duels in 2021) there were high expectations for the third battle between Ruud and Tsitsipas, and after an hour 49-minute duel that was decided 6-4, 7-6(4) in favor of the Norwegian, the match did not disappoint.

Ruud, seeded fourth, managed to convert 88% of points with his first serve and saved the five breaks he had in the match. In the first set, he took the lead at 5-3 and in 39 minutes showed that having arrived since Tuesday prior to the start of the tournament was key to acclimatize to the Cabo Tennis Open court. For the second set, defending champion Stefanos Tsitsipas (No. 11), got into rhythm but the difference was minimal in the tiebreak. The Greek had 12 aces on one side, but also one double fault and six unforced errors.

“It’s my first final in several months, it was a complicated last six months, but it’s a good start, I’m excited, my first final in Mexico. The first set was tough, the differences were minimal, it was very close in the second set, I ran on each side and tried to play aggressive when I had the chance” declared after his victory the Norwegian, who even joked with the press when asked about the great level of sport that his country currently boasts “It must be because we eat snow…”.

The second semifinal on the main court of the Cabo Sports Complex was a complete surprise for all present, as Jordan Thompson (No.40) offered a great match for the second consecutive match and was confident against the best seeded player of the tournament, Sacha Zverev. The eighth seed had already staged the best comeback of the week against Michelsen in the quarterfinals, but what he presented in his match against the big favorite was a performance that surprised the local and international fans and the sports press.

It was 3 hours 40 minutes of match with five aces for each side, only one double fault recorded for Zverev, with 61% and 62% of points won on first serve for Sacha and Jordan respectively. “I feel amazing, I had two crazy matches, I couldn’t be happier with my form and I’m going for another title so hopefully it will be better than the last two occasions.”

“Ruud is a quality player and he has a lot of finals, it’s going to be very difficult. I’m just looking for the challenge” he assured after his duel. He also thanked the crowd who applauded him on every deciding point “All night long, I can’t thank them enough.”
