Tsitsipas moves into semis at Los Cabos
- During the early hours of the fourth day of activities in Los Cabos, the second semifinal of the singles draw was defined.
Los Cabos, August 4, 2023.- Greek Stefanos Tsitipas, top seed at the Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo, knew it was going to be a tough match against Nicolas Jarry (No. 28). The Chilean is coming off solid weeks on the circuit, where he even took Carlos Alcaraz to four sets at Wimbledon and during the seventh edition of the ATP 250 tournament in Los Cabos, he did not disappoint by putting on a great show against the favorite in the stellar match at the Estadio Mextenis.
However, the world No. 5 managed to overcome a battle that lasted 3 hours, with two tie breaks in the first two sets, to finally define the score in his favor 6-7(7), (7)7-6, 6-2 and thus continue with perfect pace his debut in the Mexican tournament.
This was the first meeting on hard court between the two, since the two previous times that the Chilean had beaten Tsitsipas was on grass, while Stefanos had a previous victory against him on clay. Now the favorite in the ATP 250, continues in search of his tenth title in the circuit and first in 2023 after regaining his focus on the clay.
“I feel good and let’s go for the next one. Sometimes it seems that this kind of matches are necessary for continuity in a tournament. You get to play tennis at a lot of intensity at a high level. I hope I can move stronger from now on and take as much as I can” assured an exhausted Stefanos Tsitsipas after his match.
While Jarry, who even vomited during the match due to the physical demand in which the game unfolded, confessed that “There is progress, I try to stay with that. That’s how matches against the best are, they are small details that we have to make strong and it’s the only way to do it. These types of players don’t give you one,” he concluded after 1 a.m. in Los Cabos.
At the end of the match, it was the turn of the Croatian Borna Coric against Ilya Ivashka, where the fourth seed managed to beat the Belarusian 6-3, 6-4 to seal his pass to the semifinals in Los Cabos, where he will face Stefanos Tsitsipas this Friday.
