Borna Coric, a tennis player inspired by Mike Tyson

  • The Croatian (No. 15) arrives at the ATP 250 in Los Cabos with a chance to challenge for the title.

Mexico City, July 18, 2023.- Tennis and boxing are two technically, physically and mentally demanding sports, where although there are doubles or mixed doubles matches, by excellence the so-called white sport is played in a one-on-one duel, as happens inside the ring. Perhaps that is the attraction that Croatian Borna Coric sees in both disciplines.

Coric, currently No. 15 in the world, and who is on the list of players to attend the Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo 2023 in Los Cabos, has shared that “if I wasn’t a tennis player, I would be a boxer”. It is not for nothing that his favorite sports celebrity is former American boxer Mike Tyson, who at the age of 20 became the youngest heavyweight champion in history. It was in 1996 that he won the World Boxing Council (WBC) title and dominated his division from the late 1980s to the mid-1990s.

By the way the Croatian, was able to meet his hero and idol when Tyson attended the Indian Wells Masters in March 2016. There Coric was just 19 years old and had been a pro for three years since he made his debut in 2013.

“(As a kid) I watched his fights and I found it very entertaining, I loved the way he fought. He was really cool. I always wanted to meet him,” Coric said in a 2020 ATP interview. Now 26 years old, he arrives in Los Cabos, where the 250 points in dispute are important for Coric to continue approaching the Top 10 after he obtained his best position in the ranking on November 5, 2018 when he reached the 12th rung.

After falling to the 278th spot at the end of May 2022, the Croatian began a meteoric rise by reaching the Cincinnati Masters 1000 title. In the final he defeated Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, who will also be in Los Cabos.

In addition to that tournament played on hard court, Coric adds two other titles, the Halle tournament on grass that he won in 2018 and Marrakech, on clay, which he was credited in 2017.

Chilean Nicolas Jarry to play the Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo in Los Cabos

  • He is the second highest ranked Latin American tennis player in the ATP ranking as No. 26 in the world.

Mexico City, July 17, 2023. – Chilean Nicolás Jarry will reach the main draw of the Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo de Los Cabos to be played from July 31 to August 5 at the Cabo Sports Complex (CSC) thanks to one of the three wild cards given by the tournament.

Jarry is one of the Latin American players who has been a sensation in this part of the season along with Argentine Franciso Cerúndolo (No. 20). It usually happens that players from the region almost automatically become favorites of the Mexican fans.

The Chilean started the year at number 152 and at the end of February and beginning of March he climbed 100 places after reaching the semifinals of the ATP 500 in Rio de Janeiro, where he lost to Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, and later won the ATP 250 in Chile to reach number 52 in the world ranking.

His rapid ascent in just a few months is due to his solid tennis on clay that has translated into titles, in addition to the fact that he managed to advance over his best results in the last three Grand Slams. At the French Open he reached the round of 16 and at Wimbledon he reached the third round, which has taken him to a career-best ranking of No. 26.

This will be the first foray of Jarry, 27 years old, in a tournament of this category in Mexico. His goal will be to challenge the six star players announced two weeks ago.

Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas (No.5), Russian Karen Khachanov (No.11), British Cameron Norrie (No.13), champion in 2021 and finalist in 2022; American Tommy Paul (No. 14), Croatian Borna Coric (No.15) and Acapulco 2023 champion, Australian Alex de Miñaur (No.18).

Jarry, a professional since 2014, has three titles in his career, all on clay, in Bastad 2019 and Geneva and Santiago de Chile this 2023.

Tommy Paul raises his hand for Americans at ATP 250 in Los Cabos

  • World No. 15 seeks to return to U.S. tennis prominence

Mexico City, July 10, 2023.- Tommy Paul along with Taylor Fritz, Frances Tiafoe and Sebastian Korda, are the four U.S. tennis players ranked in the Top 25 of the ATP and who have fought in recent years to return prominence to tennis in their country.

With a high-level performance on hard court, the surface of Los Cabos and his favorite, Paul (No. 15) will arrive at the ATP 250 Los Cabos with great chances to stand out in a tournament in which he will make his debut and that in 2019 and 2021 saw his compatriots Taylor Fritz and Brandon Nakashima, respectively, reach the final.

Paul, 26, will face the Mifel Tennis Open by Oppo Telcel in Los Cabos, to be played from July 31 to August 5, with the slogan of raising his hand for American tennis, which for the seventh edition only called to the main draw three players from that nation: Paul himself, veteran John Isner (No.103) and Aleksandar Kovacevic (No.120).

The geographic location of the Los Cabos tournament usually draws the attention of more tennis players from the United States every year, but in its seventh edition representatives from Europe and Latin America have occupied the 19 direct places offered by the tournament.

Tommy Paul, a finalist at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presented by HSBC in early March, said at that tournament that his main goal for the current season was to break into the Top 10 and win titles and that is what he will try to do at the ATP 250 in Los Cabos.

For Paul and the rest of the tennis players who are close to the Top 10, moving up one position represents an extraordinary achievement, that is why reaching the Top 10 is a goal that few achieve in their career and Tommy is very close to it.

If he reaches the top 10, where his compatriots Taylor Fritz (No. 9) and Frances Tiafoe (No. 10) are already ranked, Paul would help his country’s tennis to make a coup with three Americans in the Top 10, the most by any country in recent years.

In terms of titles won, Paul has won only one so far, in Stockholm in 2021, while in 2023 he has reached the finals in Eastbourne (grass) and Acapulco (hard court), which he lost to Australian Alex de Miñaur.

Alex de Miñaur, from Acapulco to Los Cabos to get closer to the Top-10

  • The Australian is looking for more points in the second ATP tournament in Mexico.

Mexico City, July 10, 2023.- Australian Alex de Miñaur (No. 17) began 2023 ranked 24th in the rankings and although in seven months he has climbed 7 positions, his path to the Top-10 has been like trying to reach the top of Everest, with constant challenges.

In that journey, De Miñaur went through the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presented by HSBC. On March 4, he lifted the Acapulco ATP 500 title by defeating American Tommy Paul in three sets.

With the 500 points from the Mexican tournament, on March 6 he was ranked 18th in the ATP rankings, the best position in his career up to that moment, and since then he has not left his place within the top 20 in the world.

As recently as June 26, De Miñaur appeared at No. 16, the best ranking in a career that began in 2015.

Now, in the second half of the year, the 24-year-old Australian has the chance to return to Mexico to play the Mifel Tennis Open by Oppo Telcel in Los Cabos to be held from July 31 to August 5.

By attending the Los Cabos ATP 250, De Miñaur has the chance to attempt an accomplishment that so far only American Sam Querrey has achieved in 2017: winning both Mexican tournaments in the same season.

That year, Querrey claimed two of the 10 titles he won in singles during his career by winning the Acapulco ATP 500 and the second edition of the Los Cabos ATP 250 by beating Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis in the final.

In this 2023, de Miñaur, whose mother is Spanish and father is Uruguayan, has accumulated good performances, being one of his best achievements the title of the Acapulco Open 500 and the final in the traditional London / Queen’s Club tournament played on grass.

After the final in Acapulco, the Australian assured the media that he has the level to be one of the 10 best tennis players in the world and he only needs to prove it and sustain it.

“I always thought I had this level and I had not been able to show it. This is my third ATP 500 final and I was finally able to win it; now I will try to go up and improve day by day (…) I must play well in the Masters 1000, the Grand Slams and beat the best in the world”, he said after lifting his first title of the year.

SIX TOP 20 WILL BE AT THE MIFEL TENNIS OPEN BY TELCEL OPPO 2023

  • Tsitsipas, Khachanov, Norrie, Paul and de Miñaur are joined by Coric and Isner to play in Los Cabos.
  • The seventh edition of the ATP 250 Los Cabos will take place from July 31 to August 5.
  • Mexican junior Rodrigo Pachecho will receive a wildcard to play in the main draw.

Mexico City, July 4, 2023.- The Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo 2023 has designed, for its seventh edition, its best roster of players by summoning six of the top 20 tennis players in the world, who will play from July 31 to August 5 at the Cabo Sports Complex (CSC).

Previously five players had already been confirmed, the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas (No.5), the Russian Karen Khachanov (No.11), the British Cameron Norrie (No.13), champion in 2021 and finalist in 2022; in addition to the champion of Acapulco 2023, the Australian Alex de Miñaur (No.16), and the American Tommy Paul (No. 17).

Now added are Croatian world No.14 Borna Coric and 2021 doubles champion, veteran John Isner. In addition to Portugal’s Nuno Borges (No.69) and Germany’s Dominik Koepker “We have a very complete draw for a tournament that has been growing and consolidating every year,” explained tournament director José Antonio Fernández.

“Undoubtedly these players, who have stood out and climbed positions in recent months at the top of the ATP ranking, give a great boost to the tournament and shape what we consider, so far, the best draw of the tournament. We have had a great acceptance in the northern part of Mexico and also in the southern part of the United States,” he added.

This year there are several debutants in the ATP 250, including Tsitsipas, a favorite of the Mexican fans, as well as Khachanov and Paul. Norrie will be looking for his second title in Los Cabos, after winning the fifth edition, and de Miñaur will be looking for the Mexican double after winning the title in Acapulco at the beginning of the year against Tommy Paul. Borna Coric boasts three titles on three different surfaces and as for Mexican players, the outstanding junior Rodrigo Pachecho will receive a wildcard to play in the main draw.

The Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo 2023, the best tournament of the category in Latin America, will have a main singles draw of 28 players and 16 doubles pairs. The seventh edition will be the last time the tournament will be held in the summer, as by 2024, it will be held in the eighth week of the calendar, prior to the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presented by HSBC in Acapulco.

Mexico will have two ATP tournaments, a 250 and a 500 in consecutive weeks, thanks to the work, organization and experience of Mextenis. The organizers highlighted that the tournament and the incredible facilities are ready to receive more than 30,000 fans during the week of the tournament.

The Cabo Sports Complex (CSC) welcomed the public for the first time in 2022. The multifunctional sports complex boasts magnificent facilities and exquisite architectural design, built jointly by Mextenis and Olarena. It has a stadium with a capacity for 3,500 fans, a Grandstand for 1,500 people and three courts that can be adapted to receive up to 800 spectators. In addition to a special area for players.

The Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo is an annual men’s tennis sporting event that boasts ATP 250 status. The tournament is organized by Mextenis and takes place in Los Cabos, located in the state of Baja California Sur, Mexico.

Since its first edition in 2016, the tournament has been acclaimed for its stunning natural setting on the Baja California peninsula, which combines the beauty of the Sea of Cortez.

For one week in August, the world’s top tennis players compete in the Los Cabos Tennis Open, attracting a large number of fans from around the world. In addition to providing a world-class sporting spectacle, the tournament also offers a variety of social events, parties and charitable activities for all attendees.

Cameron Norrie, with the hunger and desire to return to the Top-10 of the ATP

  • Facundo Lugones, coach of the British tennis player, says that his player is working to stay in the top positions.
  • Norrie has good chemistry with the Mexican public and that is why he prioritizes playing in Los Cabos and Acapulco.

Mexico City, June 26, 2023.- For Argentine Facundo Lugones, coach of British Cameron Norrie (No.13), there are two main characteristics that a high-level player must possess: hunger and the desire to work. Cameron fulfills both.

“It’s very difficult to make it into the top 10. Then there’s the hunger and the will to work. They always have to be there and then you have to have a solid team in which you can surround yourself with people you can trust and keep setting new goals, setting the bar a little higher each time,” said Lugones.

For the Argentine coach, if a player aspires to enter the tennis elite, they can’t think about anything other than their sport and so he works with Norrie, one of the five star players who will be at the Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo 2023 in Los Cabos to be played from July 31 to August 5 at the Cabo Sports Complex (CSC).

Between the last weeks of August, September and the first week of October 2022, Norrie entered the Top-10 where he occupied the 9th and 8th places, a ranking zone to which he seeks to return.

In addition to the Briton, the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas (No. 5), the Russian Karen Khachanov (No. 11), the American Tommy Paul (No. 15), as well as the champion of Acapulco 2023, the Australian Alex de Miñaur (No. 18) are confirmed for the seventh edition of the ATP 250 of Los Cabos.

Precisely in Los Cabos, Norrie was champion in 2021, his first title as a professional, and was also a finalist in 2022, and for those achievements he is widely followed by Mexican fans. “Cameron has achieved a great identification with the Mexican public. He likes to play in Mexico and has always relied on the two tournaments Acapulco and Los Cabos and has always had good matches and good results,” exposed the coach.

“So that has generated a very good chemistry with the Mexican public, Cameron is a player who always leaves everything on the court and very friendly with the fans either signing autographs and taking pictures, he always has time for them and in Mexico people like those players with that humility and who leave everything in every match,” explained Lugones.

The coach said that the Briton chooses tournaments in Mexico because “he likes to play at night” and his adaptation to the heat and humidity conditions has always been good and “in Mexico he is always OK, especially in Los Cabos, a place that has a special place in Cameron’s head and heart.

Norrie, a professional since 2017, accumulates five titles in his career. In 2021 the ATP 250 Los Cabos and the ATP Masters 1000 Indian Wells and in 2022 he was credited with the Lyon and Delray Beach tournaments and in 2023 he won in Rio de Janeiro.

MEXICAN RODRIGO PACHECO, JUNIOR DOUBLES CHAMPION AT ROLAND GARROS

Mexico City, June 8. Mexican Rodrigo Pacheco, number 1 in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) junior world ranking, won this Saturday the junior doubles tournament title at the second Grand Slam of the season, Roland Garros.

Pacheco, a player supported by Mextenis, lifted the title along with his Russian partner Yaroslav Denim, who defeated Italians Lorenzo Sciahbasi and Gabriele Vulpitta 6-2, 6-3, to win the title in Paris.

This achievement represented the first Grand Slam for the Mexican, who just turned 18 years old in April. In this way, Pacheco gave Mexico an achievement at world level that is historic in Mexican sport.

Although he had a difficult start, being eliminated in the first round of singles at Roland Garros, Pacheco had a better performance in doubles until he reached the championship.

Two weeks ago, Pacheco, a great promise of Mexican tennis, was installed as number 1 in the junior world ranking of the International Tennis Federation (ITF), an achievement never before reached by a Mexican player.

With his first Grand Slam title, Pacheco added his name to those of other Mexicans who have won a Grand Slam doubles title at the junior level. Previous winners include Leonardo Lavalle at the 1984 US Open, Agustin Moreno at Wimbledon in 1985 and Enrique Abaroa at Roland Garros in 1992.

For the 18-year-old, it was his third Grand Slam tournament, having previously played Roland Garros and Wimbledon in 2022, as well as the Australian Open in 2023.

Two weeks ago Pacheco, who was born on April 25, 2005, reached the top spot in world junior tennis after a brilliant performance at the Bonfiglio Trophy in Milan, Italy, where he won the tournament in singles and doubles.

For the Mexican junior, whom the Mextenis Group has supported in the last two years with invitations to its tournaments in Acapulco and Los Cabos, 2023 has brought him great experience that will serve him well in the professional world.

In February, after the Australian Junior Open, Pacheco played his first professional tournament, the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presented by HSBC, ATP 500 category. In the first round, Pacheco showed his good tennis against the Australian Alex De Miñaur.

In 2022 Pacheco was invited by Mextenis to play the qualy at the Acapulco Open 500 and also received a wilcard to play at the ATP 250 in Los Cabos, which this year became the Mifel Tenis Open by Telcel Oppo and where he is likely to attend.

In addition, at the beginning of April, Pacheco played in singles and doubles in the first edition of the Leon Open presented by Mifel, an ATP 75 Challenger Tour tournament, new property of Mextenis.

Mexico’s Rodrigo Pacheco reaches No. 1 in the ITF Junior World Ranking

Mexico City, May 29 – Mexican Rodrigo Pacheco, who recently turned 18 years old, became the No. 1 in the International Tennis Federation’s (ITF) junior world ranking on Monday, an achievement never before reached by a Mexican player.

Pacheco, who was born on April 25, 2005, reached the top spot in the world junior tennis ranking after a brilliant performance at the Bonfiglio Trophy in Milan, Italy, where he won the tournament in singles and doubles.

For the Mexican junior, whom Grupo Mextenis has supported in the last two years with invitations to its tournaments in Acapulco and Los Cabos, 2023 will be unforgettable and transcendental.

After the junior Australian Open, Pacheco Mendez reached fourth place in the ITF junior ranking and almost a month later he made his debut in a professional ATP 500 tournament at the age of 17 when he played the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presented by HSBC.

In this event, despite being eliminated in the first round by Australian Alex De Miñaur, the eventual champion, Pacheco showed his good tennis. In 2022 Pacheco was invited by Mextenis to play the qualy at the Acapulco Open 500 and also received a wilcard to play at the ATP 250 in Los Cabos, which this year became the Mifel Tenis Open by Telcel Oppo and where it is possible that he will attend.

In addition, at the beginning of April, Pacheco played in singles and doubles in the first edition of the Leon Open presented by Mifel, an ATP 75 Challenger Tour tournament, new property of Mextenis.

THE DOUBLE IN MILAN

In his time in Milan, the Mexican defeated on Sunday the American Cooper Williams by 6-4, 7-5 in the singles final, while on Saturday in doubles, together with the Russian Yaroslav Demin, they defeated the Italian Federico Cina and the Japanese Rei Sakamoto by 6-3, 6-3.

Sunday’s win in singles brought 500 points awarded by the Grade A tournament to the champion and with that figure on Monday Pacheco appeared with a total of 2,334.5 points, ahead of Alexander Blockx, current Australian Open champion, with 2,087 points and Gilles Arnaud, with 1,900 points, both from Belgium.

This performance gives him confidence to face the junior Roland Garros, which, he has said, will be his last tournament as a junior to give way to his stage as a professional tennis player.

Pacheco reached the pinnacle of junior tennis for Mexico, although there were players who came close before. In 1986 Eduardo Velez became number two in the world after winning the Wimbledon Junior Tournament, while other players such as Cesar Ramirez and Oliver Fernandez, reached as high as number 3 in the ITF.

The Bonfiglio Trophy is considered one of the five most important tournaments within the ITF junior circuit. According to its official website, it is on the same level as the Australian Open (Melbourne), Roland Garros (Paris), Wimbledon (London), US Open (New York) and Orange Bowl (Miami).

Surprising De Miñaur seeks to sign the double in Mexico

  • Australian Alex de Miñaur, champion in the 2023 edition of Acapulco, is among the contenders for the title in Los Cabos.

Mexico City, May 25 – With a Uruguayan father and Spanish mother, Australian Alex De Miñaur, currently 19th in the world, has won the affection of the Mexican public with his perfect Spanish and now has the possibility this 2023 to achieve the double in the ATP tournaments held in Mexico.

At the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presented by HSBC held in Acapulco last March, de Miñaur emerged as the surprise champion and is now announced for the Mifel Tennis Open by Oppo Telcel in Los Cabos to be played from July 31 to August 5.

By attending Los Cabos, De Miñaur has the chance to realize an accomplishment that so far only American Sam Querrey has achieved in 2017: winning both Mexican tournaments in the same season. That year, Querrey registered two of the 10 titles he won in singles during his career by winning the Acapulco ATP 500 and the second edition of the Los Cabos ATP 250.

The Australian’s trajectory, a professional since 2015, has been on the rise in recent months and the Acapulco title was the boost he needed to break into the ATP Top 20. On his way to the title, Alex defeated Mexican Rodrigo Pacheco, Italian Jacopo Berrettini, Japanese Taro Daniel, Danish Holger Rune and American Tommy Paul.

At the age of 24, he is living the best moment of his career, in which he accumulates 7 ATP titles, among them the 250 of Sydney, Atlanta and Zhuhai that he added in 2019, the one of Antalya and Eastbourne in 2021 and Atlanta for 2022, added to the Open 500 of Acapulco. With this triumph in the XXX edition of the AMT, Demon, the nickname by which de Miñaur is known, joined other champions such as Thomas Muster, Juan Ignacio Chela, Gustavo Kuerten, Carlos Moyá, Rafael Nadal, David Ferrer,y Nicolás Almagro, Sam Querrey, his compatriot Nick Kyrgios or Alexander Zverev, among others.

Stefanos Tsitsipas: tennis, music and videoblogs

  • World No. 5 to make his debut at the Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo
  • His father Apostolos has been his coach and on one occasion saved his life.

Mexico City, May 13, 2023.- Renowned for both his talent as a player and his charismatic personality, Stefanos Tsitsipas will make his debut at the Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo as the top seed in the ATP 250 tournament. Known for his rapid rise in the rankings and for making history as the first Greek to win a tour-level title, he reached the No. 3 rung of the ATP rankings in 2021, a year in which he won two of the nine titles he boasts.

In 2015 he had an experience that marked him as a human being and as a tennis player. His father, Apostolos, who is also his coach, was the one who saved him from drowning when Stefanos was swept away by the current of the sea in the Island of Crete. He has acknowledged that after that episode he sees life from a different perspective and that it was something that changed him psychologically. After what he considers was a second chance, his leap to professional player came just a year later, in 2016.

It was his parents who introduced him to physical activity and sports from the age of three. Apostolos studied everything related to the white sport, was a chair umpire and coach, while his Moscow-born mother, Julia Apostoli, was a professional tennis player. He started with his tennis lessons at a summer resort where they both worked. With the passage of time came the move to Nice so he could train at the Academy of Patrick Mouratoglou, coach of Serena Williams and later as a junior he reached No. 1 in the world.

There is no doubt that the sacrifice of his father, Stefanos has paid for it with success. After the 2018 conquest of the NextGen ATP Finals, Apostolos confessed that he was still learning every day and hoped to be a good coach to work for his son’s dreams. Today Tsitsipas is the Greek tennis player who has come the farthest and at 25 he has made his goal clear: “I don’t want people to know me only for my tennis,” he said in an interview.

Among his passions are also producing music and recording video blogs. He also starred in the first season of the Netflix series Break Point.

On his favorite Big Three player, Stefanos, who has faced all three, went with Roger Federer.
“For me the GOAT is not about titles…Federer and then Nadal”, and trying to follow in his wake, in recent years he has continued to rise and has been confident that he will conquer a Grand Slam “it’s only a matter of time”.
