Mexican Santiago Gonzalez lifts doubles title at Los Cabos

  • Gonzalez and Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin won their third title of the year.
  • The Mexican achieves his first win in Mexico

Los Cabos, August 5, 2023.- Mexican Santiago Gonzalez and Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin, top seeds, defeated German Dominik Koepfer and Australian Andrew Harris to lift the doubles title at the Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo held this week in Los Cabos.

The Mexican and the Frenchman won 6-4, 7-5 in one hour and 23 minutes to win their third title of the year after the Miami and Marseille Masters 1000 titles.

After the triumph at the Los Cabos ATP 250, Gonzalez joined compatriots Miguel Angel Reyes Varela, who won in 2018 alongside Salvadoran Marcelo Arevalo, and Hans Hach Verdugo, who along with American John Isner were champions in 2021.

The first set was defined in favor of the winners as they broke their opponents in the third game and then defended their serve for 3-1. Then both pairs held their serve until reaching 6-4.

In the second set the break for Gonzalez and Vasselin also came in the third game and they reached a 5-4 lead, but the German and the Australian broke for 5-5. Gonzalez and Vasselin recovered the break and defended their serve for 7-5.

“(Winning the title in Mexico) was something I had nailed on and well to get it today was a dream come true along with the help of Edouard. We did a good job at the end of the day and we are very happy. I’m very happy to finally win at home, trophy number 21 and to continue having a great year,” said Gonzalez after the match.

Gonzalez claimed his first title in Mexico in his second final, his first coming at the Acapulco Open 500 in 2015 alongside Poland’s Mariusz Fyrstenberg.

Stefanos Tsitsipas is first confirmed for back to back in 2024

  • Tournament Director Geoffrey Fernandez confirmed the first player for the Los Cabos and Acapulco editions in February 2024.
  • Stefanos Tsitsipas to star in Los Cabos ATP 250 final against Aussie Alex de Miñaur

Los Cabos, August 5, 2023.- Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, current World No.5, was confirmed as the first player to attend the Los Cabos ATP 250 and Acapulco ATP 500 tournaments to be held in consecutive weeks in Mexico in February and March 2024, announced Jose Antonio Fernandez, director of the Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo.

“I can confirm to you that Tsitsipas will be with us and also that we will have two other Top 10 players in the back to back. Stefanos has told us that he wants to return to Mexico and we are very happy with his decision. He is a very beloved player with the fans and it can be said that we have started very well on the road to the two tournaments we have in 2024,” said Fernandez at the closing conference of the seventh edition in Los Cabos.

He recalled that the Greek, who will be 25 years old on August 12, has achieved a connection with the Mexican public because of the way he gives his all on the court.

He was also proud and excited about the final of the tournament between the Greek and Australian Alex de Miñaur.

“The result is a wonderful final, several players have achieved both finals and not to mention the doubles tournament with Santiago Gonzalez. He is going through his best moment at this age, it would be wonderful if he won, he deserves it. They were long days but the tennis level was very high. He also highlighted the participation of the young Mexicans who were participating in this edition,” he added.

Fernandez reminded that the eighth edition of the Cabo Tennis Open tournament will be played from February 19 to 24, while the 31st edition of the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presented by HSBC will take place from February 26 to March 2.

“We are practically with a Grand Slam in two venues, more complicated, but the challenge is going to be for us. There are several companies, four or five that have more than one tournament on the ATP tour, but we are the only ones that have the challenge of doing them in consecutive weeks,” he said.

The executive also took advantage of the conference to make a balance of the tournament and advanced preliminary estimates and said that the tournament generated an economic revenue greater than last year’s 109 million pesos.
“The numbers will improve in February. There will be better weather and that is going to work in the tournament’s favor. The biggest challenge this year was the heat. On the other hand, on Wednesday the stadium was already at 91% capacity and in 2024 hotel occupancy will be at 90%.”

Regarding the attendance at the tournament, Fernandez pointed out that this year the tournament registered an attendance that exceeded 31 thousand spectators. In addition, direct and indirect jobs were generated and are growing,” he assured.

The double of Mexican tournaments in the ATP calendar adapts to the needs of the tennis players who will be able to tour the Mexican territory before traveling to the Indian Wells Masters 1000 in California.

“Last and not least is the work to do with the San Jose home with up to 50 children who have many needs. A long term project and leaves more footprint in the community. It is the right way to support children,” he concluded about the social responsibility program Play for All!

Title in Mexico, a dream about to be fulfilled by Santiago Gonzalez

  • The Mexican alongside Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin is looking for his first title in his homeland.

Los Cabos, August 5, 2023.- Mexican Santiago Gonzalez, currently fifth in the ATP doubles ranking, will try to fulfill this Saturday at the Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo a long-cherished dream, to lift a title in Mexico.

Gonzalez, 40, has so far had his best season as a professional by winning the Miami Masters 1000 title and having outstanding performances in other tournaments such as Marseille, where he was also champion.

“Our goal is to reach Turin and play the ATP doubles finals and we are on that path, this year has been good for us,” Gonzalez told media.

About his participation in the seventh edition of the 250 tournament in Los Cabos, the Mexican pointed out that the important thing for him and his partner is always to compete and give their best in every match.

“I know that if I have a good week, a good tournament, I have a good chance to win. I like to play at home with the support of the public and hopefully this can be my week and if not, nothing happens, I will enjoy the tournament and focus on everything that comes next,” he said.

Gonzalez, who has been constant in his participations in the Acapulco Open 500 and the Cabo Tennis Open, acknowledged that as a Mexican tennis player “it is a dream to win in Mexico, although first of all his goal in the end will always be to win matches and all matches count for the ranking and hopefully we can achieve it”.

He recalled that tournaments are only won by a couple and in tennis, as in many sports, you lose more times than you win.

“The important thing is to keep adding victories and points for the ranking, that is the expectation for the rest of the year. For us this is the first tournament of the summer and the U.S. tour is coming up and hopefully we can start off on the right foot,” he said.

After qualifying for the final in Los Cabos, the Mexican and the Frenchman will be looking for their third title of the year after the titles they won together, the Miami Masters 1000 and the Marseille tournament.

“In the finals this year we have done well and tomorrow we want to win and I hope that with the push of the fans it will be a great day for us,” he added.

Gonzalez will be looking for his first title tonight in Mexico in his second final, the first he signed at the Mexican Open in Acapulco in 2015 alongside Poland’s Mariusz Fyrstenberg.

At the Los Cabos ATP 250, two Mexicans reached the final and won it, the first was Miguel Ángel Reyes Varela alongside Salvadoran Marcelo Arévalo in 2018 and the second was Hans Hach Verdugo alongside American John Isner in 2021.

Tsitsipas and De Miñaur reach Los Cabos final

  • The Acapulco champion and the favorite at the Cabo Tennis Open will meet in the final of the seventh edition of the tournament.

Los Cabos, August 4, 2023.- Australian Alex de Miñaur, fifth seeded, extended this Friday his victories on Mexican soil to nine and with today’s victory he reached his 13th final on the ATP Tour. De Miñaur, current world number 19, opened the fifth day’s activity at the Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo and in two hours and 25 minutes overcame seventh-seeded German Dominik Koepfer, who suffered discomfort in his left arm during the match.

The Australian, champion at the beginning of March at the Acapulco Open 500, now has the chance to seek a Mexican double by reaching the final at Los Cabos.

During the match Koepfer felt uncomfortable from the first games of the match until he fell 6-2 in the first set in only 32 minutes and even got to tears due to the pain in his arm and for the second set he called the doctor, took a pill for the pain and put a stability sleeve on his arm.

The improvement was great as he managed to get 4-1 in the second set and finally demanded a tie break from the last champion of Acapulco, which he won. That second set lasted one hour and 21 minutes and Koepfer seemed to come back and give the surprise, however for the third set, the Australian beat him 6-1.

“I’ve played well in Mexico this year, so I think next year I’ll have to look at exactly what the weeks are, but it makes sense for me to come back here. I work hard to feel good on the court, it’s something that will never fail me,” said De Miñaur after his match.

Later, Greek top seed Stefanos Tsitsipas and Croatian Borna Coric, tied at 3-3 in direct duels, defined the second finalist, a ticket that the Greek won in a remarkable way. The world No. 5 managed to make the score 4-3 against the fourth-seeded Croatian, and settled in his 27th ATP final, third of 2023, in which he will seek his tenth career title and the first of 2023.

Coric was down 3-6 in the first set and by the second his level dropped considerably. Tsitsipas had no setback to close out the second set 6-2 and settle the match in one hour and 11 minutes.

In the final, Tsitsioas has a 9-0 record against De Miñaur and is the favorite to lift the title this Saturday in the final of the ATP 250 of Los Cabos.

Santiago Gonzalez and Edouard Roger-Vasselin reach doubles final

  • The Mexican and the Frenchman will look for their third title of the year.
  • Gonzalez is looking for his first title in Mexico

Los Cabos, August 4, 2023.- Mexican Santiago Gonzalez and Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin, top seeds, advanced this Friday to the doubles final of the Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo being held in Los Cabos.

Gonzalez and Roger-Vasselin defeated Colombian Nicolas Barrientos and Swede Andre Goransson 6-7, 6-4, 10-8 in a hard-fought match in two hours and one minute.

With hard fought points, the Mexican and the Frenchman recovered after losing the opening set, won the second and came out on top in the super tie break.

“We knew the match was not going to be easy at all and we leave very happy with the fight we had the whole match, it’s one more step and hopefully tomorrow we will have a good match,” said Gonzalez after the match.

He said that they have a certain advantage for playing at home with the support of the public, but warned that the final will be difficult.

After qualifying for the final in Los Cabos, the Mexican and the Frenchman will be looking for their third title of the year after the Miami and Marseille Master 1000 titles.

“If today’s match was complicated, tomorrow’s will be even more so and we will have to play well. In the finals this year we have done well and tomorrow we want to win and I hope that with the push of the fans it will be a great day for us,” he added.

In addition, Gonzalez is looking for his first title in Mexico in his second final, the first one he signed at the Acapulco Open 500 in 2015 alongside Poland’s Mariusz Fyrstenberg.

At the Los Cabos ATP 250, two Mexicans reached the final and won it, the first was Miguel Ángel Reyes Varela alongside Salvadoran Marcelo Arévalo in 2018 and the second was Hans Hach Verdugo alongside American John Isner in 2021.

Gonzalez and Vasselin will clash in the final against the winning pair of the duel between Ecuadorian Diego Hidalgo and Colombian Cristian Rodriguez (COL) against German Dominik Koepfer and Australian Andrew Harris.

PLAY FOR ALL! Social responsibility program is a priority for Mextenis

  • PLAY FOR ALL! Social responsibility program is a priority for Mextenis

Los Cabos, August 3, 2023.- Year after year the objective is not lost. Contributing to the local community of Los Cabos is a priority for the Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo and Mextenis. During the seventh edition of the ATP 250 tournament, director Geoffrey Fernandez, explained the different projects encompassed by the social responsibility area known as Play For All! and revealed details about the new program focused on children from a DIF children’s home.

“We reached a unanimous agreement with the Mayor’s Office and its agencies and considered that it was more relevant to support a home that is just starting and has many requirements. The home cares for newborn children and up to 17 year old adolescents who have many needs. Initially the project, in 2022, was to build a tennis court, but we agreed to change to this incredible new project, we are going to join the task from now on, to improve the structure and equipment of their school. Our architects have already come and made a survey with the construction,” shared Fernández excitedly.
“What was going to be invested for the field in 2022, will be added together with that of 2023. It is a long-term commitment, we consider that it is more important and leaves more of an impact on so many children. This is the best way to continue contributing to the community, what Mextenis has done since it arrived in Los Cabos,” he added.

Geoffrey Fernandez explained that no ideal land was found to install the court and after a consensus in which different authorities were also involved, it was decided that it was of greater relevance to support children and families.

In this sense, the second edition of Family Day was also held this Wednesday at the Cabo Sports Complex (CSC), where 70 local families and the children of the DIF children’s home were invited to experience a day of many emotions through the connection with sports.

“If the children today want to do outdoor activities it is impossible because of the weather, we are going to create a roof in the courtyard of their school so that they have a more adapted space. We are going to remodel all the dormitories, improve the furniture, bunk beds, closets, kitchen equipment, expansion in areas, it is an ambitious and very exciting project,” said the tournament director.
He also said that the court that was painted in a public school in the municipality was done in conjunction with the company Comex and that Mextenis will be doing the same in public areas of Acapulco in the coming years.

“At the end of each tournament we also donate sports material to schools, balls and implements, this so that the children have material for sports activities. In addition to hydration. Finally we have the work of Becar, a program in which this year we are going to give up to 65 scholarships for schools that do not have the system or software for children to receive English classes, a very important learning tool in Los Cabos,” concluded the director about the Play For All! program.

Tsitsipas moves into semis at Los Cabos

  • During the early hours of the fourth day of activities in Los Cabos, the second semifinal of the singles draw was defined.

Los Cabos, August 4, 2023.- Greek Stefanos Tsitipas, top seed at the Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo, knew it was going to be a tough match against Nicolas Jarry (No. 28). The Chilean is coming off solid weeks on the circuit, where he even took Carlos Alcaraz to four sets at Wimbledon and during the seventh edition of the ATP 250 tournament in Los Cabos, he did not disappoint by putting on a great show against the favorite in the stellar match at the Estadio Mextenis.

However, the world No. 5 managed to overcome a battle that lasted 3 hours, with two tie breaks in the first two sets, to finally define the score in his favor 6-7(7), (7)7-6, 6-2 and thus continue with perfect pace his debut in the Mexican tournament.

This was the first meeting on hard court between the two, since the two previous times that the Chilean had beaten Tsitsipas was on grass, while Stefanos had a previous victory against him on clay. Now the favorite in the ATP 250, continues in search of his tenth title in the circuit and first in 2023 after regaining his focus on the clay.

“I feel good and let’s go for the next one. Sometimes it seems that this kind of matches are necessary for continuity in a tournament. You get to play tennis at a lot of intensity at a high level. I hope I can move stronger from now on and take as much as I can” assured an exhausted Stefanos Tsitsipas after his match.

While Jarry, who even vomited during the match due to the physical demand in which the game unfolded, confessed that “There is progress, I try to stay with that. That’s how matches against the best are, they are small details that we have to make strong and it’s the only way to do it. These types of players don’t give you one,” he concluded after 1 a.m. in Los Cabos.

At the end of the match, it was the turn of the Croatian Borna Coric against Ilya Ivashka, where the fourth seed managed to beat the Belarusian 6-3, 6-4 to seal his pass to the semifinals in Los Cabos, where he will face Stefanos Tsitsipas this Friday.

Mexico’s Santiago Gonzalez moves into semifinals

  • The Mexican doubles player is one win away from reaching the finals in Los Cabos.

Los Cabos, August 3, 2023. – Mexican Santiago Gonzalez and Frenchman Roger-Vasselin advanced to the semifinals of the Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo and are now one win away from reaching the final of the doubles tournament.

The Mexican-French duo defeated British Julian Cash and American Robert Galloway 6-4, 6-4. Now both favorites will face Colombian Nicolás Barrientos and Swede Andre Goransson in the semifinals.

“We are happy to be in the semifinals and we are two matches away from the title. Now it’s time to rest and be ready for Friday’s semifinal”, said Gonzalez after the match.

About the good performance alongside his French partner, the local said that they have worked hard “and in the end we got together for a reason, the two times we played last year went very well and we automatically generated good chemistry”.

The Mexican explained that in order to go for the title, they must improve in each match. “Our goals are clear: try to win tournaments, reach the final stages in the most important tournaments,” he said.

In other matches, Colombia’s Nicolas Barrientos and Sweden’s Andre Goransson defeated Americans Nathaniel Lammons and Jackson Withrow 7-6, 4-6, 10-6, while Germany’s Dominik Koepfer and Australia’s Andrew Harris defeated Venezuela’s Luis Martinez and India’s Saketh Miyeni 3-6, 6-3, 10-5.

First semifinal ready in Los Cabos: Koepfer vs. De Miñaur

Los Cabos, August 3, 2022.- The first semifinal of the seventh edition of the Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo was defined after the respective victories of German Dominik Koepfer and Australian Alex de Miñaur, who have only met once before and the current world No. 84 won.

In a rematch of the Acapulco final in February, Alex de Miñaur (No. 19) advanced after defeating Tommy Paul (No. 14) in three sets 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

It was the fifth victory over the American, against whom he has a total dominance despite the fact that Paul is going through the best ranking of his career. With the victory, the Australian has a record of 8-0 on Mexican soil this season after winning the Acapulco title.

In a duel that lasted 2 hours 26 minutes, the battle was close at some point of the match, however Paul collapsed mentally towards the end of the third set and lost his serve twice.
“I think today was a very important victory, against a very talented and dangerous opponent. I think I still need to improve my level, tomorrow is a new day. There have been matches that have been quite similar against Tommy, where I’m losing in the third and in the end I stay in the game” said the Acapulco champion in a conference after the match.

Earlier, in the match that opened the activity at the Mextenis Stadium, the German Dominik Koepfer defeated the American Alexander Kovacevic in one hour and 53 minutes.

It was the first time that the German and the American faced each other in an ATP duel, outside the Challenger category and after a 6-4, 7-5 win, the seventh-seeded player advanced for the second time to the quarterfinals in a row in an ATP tournament, after reaching a great level in the Atlanta Tournament last week. Now he will be looking for his second semifinals on the circuit after what he achieved in Acapulco in 2021.

Kovacevic, 24, who had stunned 2021 champion Cameron Norrie (No.13) in the round of 16 for the biggest win of his career, was no bigger challenge for the German. De Miñaur now faces Koepfer in an unprecedented semifinal.

The new generation of Mexican tennis players raise their hand in Los Cabos

  • Rodrigo Pacheco, Luis Carlos Alvarez and Luca Lemaitre stand out at the Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo 2023.

Los Cabos, August 2, 2023.- The new generation of Mexican tennis players is already a reality and has raised its hand at the ATP 250 in Los Cabos. Juniors Rodrigo Pacheco, Luis Carlos Alvarez and Luca Lemaitre stood out these days at the start of the Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo 2023.

In their first steps in international professional tournaments, the three have been gaining experience that will help them in their development in professional tennis.

With the support and encouragement of Mextenis, the three 18-year-old players, who emerged under the Tenis Con Pasión (TCP) player development program, based in Yucatan, have been showing signs of their potential and although they are in their first steps in professional tennis, they are called to be the next Mexican players to follow.

Through wildcards, Pacheco in the main draw and Alvarez and Lemaitre in the qualy, the three young players showed remarkable progress in their participation in the tournament.

The three of us have been training together for two years, which has helped a lot, with Luca and Rodrigo, we are great friends, brothers and great partners,” said Alvarez, who won his first qualy match on Saturday by defeating Brazil’s Eduardo Ribeiro 6-4, 6-4 and although he lost the second match 7-5, 5-7, 6-4, he had a good participation.

Alvarez said that the three of them push each other and motivate each other to keep growing and that has helped them to improve at an individual level.

“We are always at the limit, when we train we all want to win all the time, but it is a healthy competition and that has helped us all to improve our level little by little”, he said after his second match of the qualy where he faced Chilean Gonzalo Lama.

Meanwhile, Lemaitre lost in the first round of qualifying after losing 7-6, 6-4 in a disputed match against Kazakhstan’s Beibit Zhukayev (270 ATP), and Pacheco faced a more experienced opponent, Chile’s Nicolas Jarry (29 ATP), and although both lost, they gained valuable experience in Los Cabos.

Just 5 years ago, Alvarez was playing in the finals of the Cabo Cup children’s tournament, and today at almost 19 years old, which he will be on September 3, he reached the qualy of the ATP 250 in Los Cabos through a wild card.

In the first semester of the year, Alvarez has been developing his tennis with the Sooners of the University of Oklahoma.

While Pacheco faced in the first round of the main draw against Chilean Nicolas Jarry, to whom he lost 6-3, 6-1 leaving his progress evident and taking the best learning from the defeat.

“I am learning, doing things well, sometimes I feel I can give more. I feel that if I do things right, I gain weight, I get physically stronger, logically everything will improve, the speed of my legs, the strength in my serve and my strokes so I hope that soon those things will be reflected and if not, this is a very long race, I do not want to hurry, I want to improve every day to be better so when the time comes to be 100% I will be ready and take advantage of it”, said Pacheco after his match.
